To me....this is the best example of a slippery slope we will find, and to be honest I find it somewhat frighteneing what it may lead to:

"FBI Acknowledges: Journalists Phone Records are Fair Game

May 15, 2006 7:18 PM

Brian Ross and Richard Esposito Report:

The FBI acknowledged late Monday that it is increasingly seeking reporters' phone records in leak investigations.

"It used to be very hard and complicated to do this, but it no longer is in the Bush administration," said a senior federal official.

The acknowledgement followed our blotter item that ABC News reporters had been warned by a federal source that the government knew who we were calling.

The official said our blotter item was wrong to suggest that ABC News phone calls were being "tracked."

"Think of it more as backtracking," said a senior federal official. "

Be careful Tecoyah, you might get apologetics claiming that these leaks embolden the enemy, or undermind the war effort or the troops, or some crap about how they're un-american and deserve to have their rights pissed on...

And I wonder what's stopping them from spying on their political opponents.

What's the big issue here is the public's ability to oversee what the politicians are doing. The electorate is the final check against the abuse of govt power. The less ability the electorate has to ascertain what the politicians are doing, the more free politicians are to abuse the public trust. The freedom of press was intended to be a means for the public to keep an eye on the politicians.

As politicians limit the abilities of the electorate to oversee their conduct the more likely it is that politicians will engage in corrupt practices. Just the nature of the world.
