John Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity

Stephen Colbert's March to Keep Fear Alive

Stewart, Colbert to Hold 10/30 Rallies - Marc Ambinder - Politics - The Atlantic
~snip
It's "Fear!" v. "Simmer Down." Satirists Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert will hold competing and complimentary marches on Washington just days before the November elections, breaking the fourth wall and inserting themselves directly into the political debate in a way that might influence the November elections.

Appearing on each other's shows tonight, the two men portrayed the 10/30 marches as representing the true divide in American politics: Stewart's march is for people who want to "take it down a notch for America." Colbert's march is about "freaking out for fear," he said, because there are a lot of things to fear. Although Stewart's politics are left of center, his video montage of fear-mongers included Democrats who believe that President Bush was Hitler-esque and radical leftists who believe that 9/11 was an inside job.

Stewart and Colbert have disclaimed any interest in participating in politics. But the timing, and message, are undeniably political -- and not helpful to conservatives. Audiences for both shows tend to be younger and more liberal than the older, conservative independents who watch Fox News. The events were conceived as a response of sorts to Glenn Beck's recent "Restoring Honor" rally, which drew as much as 100,000 conservatives to the Washington mall on the anniversary of Marlin Luther King's historical speech. I'd imagine that these rallies will draw counter-rallies, and that smart conservative folks will try to incorporate them in a way that helps Republicans as well.

Depending on how the media covers the run-up to these rallies, Stewart and Colbert could generate interest and enthusiasm among the type of voters who have so far been turned off by the independent conservative resurgence.

I like Stewart. Colbert...eh...not so funny-his shtick grew old on the Daily Show. But when are these guys going to get that they simply cant win? They HATE Beck...so not only does Beck get his talk shows, but then he gets the added pop of MSNBC and Stewart and Colbert advertising MORE for him, for other media outlets advertising for him, and frankly...when compared to the 'talent' at MSNBC, they actually make Beck look good and reasonable. Beck writes books and holds rallies, they parody him...which is about the most impotent and non-creative form of comedy. Its just sad and not a little bit pathetic.

That being said...heres to hoping they have GREAT fun. They probably could hold the rally at...say...a local Starbucks or for better visual representation, a college campus. But here is hoping the angry hate filled left DOES finally find a little healing. Its been 10 years now since the Gore/Bush elections folks...come on...find a little peace and happiness.

Honestly why do you keep saying over and over again that the only the left is angry and hate filled? If anything I see more people on the right that are just plain pissed off.

Not agreeing with your viewpoint does not automaticly mean pissed off and hate filled.

I'd love to go, though I'm not sure if I'll be able to. Stewart and Colbert are both hilarious and I imagine the rallies will be as well.

I love the idea of a simmer-down rally. To Republicans: Obama is not a socialist who shoots puppies. Democrats haven't taken your civil liberties, you still own your guns, and the US economy has not become a command economy. I don't agree with some of what Obama has done, but seriously the man is not the Anti-Christ. To Democrats: Bush wasn't a fascist (as evidenced by the fact that we had elections after the one that brought him to power and his party got its ass kicked in 2006 and 2008), Republicans aren't going to nuke the world and stop all welfare rolls, and the system of checks and balances was never as totally favoring the Republicans as you guys sometimes implied. The Republicans can be dicks and wrong at times, but they don't steal candy from babies while having all minorities executed.

Of course on the other hand:

From Colbert's Page said:
"Reason" is just one letter away from "Treason." Coincidence? Reasonable people would say it is, but America can't afford to take that chance.

He makes a compelling point. :D

They're countering Beck's rally by having a political rally? Beck's wasn't about politics at all. So they're just holding their very own tea party, I guess.

They are mocking Beck more than anything, which is hilarious. Though, I think Beck should take the advice of one of the signs Stewart showed on his show, which read " I may disagree with you, but I'm pretty sure your not Hitler!" Though, half of Beck's show would be cut because he couldn't talk about the "evil" progressive's anymore

Mocking a wonderful rally about all religions coming together as one is going to help politically......how?

They're just going to make fun of people? I don't really get the point of it. Just entertainment?

It sure beats Beck's negativity:

Humor is infectious. The sound of roaring laughter is far more contagious than any cough, sniffle, or sneeze. When laughter is shared, it binds people together and increases happiness and intimacy. In addition to the domino effect of joy and amusement, laughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body. Humor and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free, and easy to use.

Mocking a wonderful rally about all religions coming together as one is going to help politically......how?

All religions, ha, yeah keep believing that fantasy.

You're right. Not all religions. Just the 3 major ones.

And people of no faith are not included in Beck's vision for America are they?

And was Islam represented? I didn't hear anything about that.

This rally is a direct response to Beck's rally.

How do you know Stewart's rally is a direct response...the rally has even happened yet.

Now what about Beck's rally was negative?

Simple, Beck himself...the guy is seething with hatred for his fellow country men.

Well except for the one's that agree with him.

And people of no faith are not included in Beck's vision for America are they?

Of course they are. He's said many times that he doesn't care if you believe in God or not. He does, hence, why he chose to hold a religious rally.

And was Islam represented? I didn't hear anything about that.

The Black Robe Regiment is made up of Jews, Christians and Muslims.

Oh, come on. They made fun of the 8/28 rally relentlessly. They're having a rally at DC too? It's obvious that it's a response to Beck's.

"seething with hatred"? Example, please?

And surely you realize that any political commentator or other partisan shows dislike for the people who do not agree with them. Watch Olbermann. Watch Maddow. Read HuffPo and Media Matters.

You seem to think it's just a "Beck" thing. Ridiculous.

Well Beck does provide plenty of material to make fun of.

Look at his diatribe against Rockfeller center....what a hoot that was.

As to the second part of your comment, the subject was Beck not the others.

Okay, let's talk about that. What did you hear that could be called "seething with hatred"?

The Black Robe Regiment is made up of Jews, Christians and Muslims.

Their website certianly does not reflect that:

Several of us have been the instruments in the vision for this endeavor and this site. First and foremost is our Heavenly Father and His only begotten Son and our Savior, Christ Jesus. Over the period of the past year, most especially, we have felt the stirring of God's agency in our lives to move ever closer to Him especially in the works that we have done here on Earth in these times that we now find ourselves in. These are trying times for our country and our world. It is only in Him and with Him that we find utility and focus for our endeavors.

As much as I love Jon Stewart, I really don't want to hear about another damn rally. I thought Stewart was above playing these stupid pundit games.

And to add it will be funny to see who bitches about this rally and who doesn't.

Who created that site?

Uhhh just a guess but maybe The Black Robe Regiment?

Which member?

It must be a member or members that really don't get it. It's not just about Christianity and it should never be broken up as the "Christian branch" and "Jewish branch" and "Muslim branch" with three different sites. It should be all of them together. I believe that was the goal on 8/28.
