I think our country, or even the world, has a collective case of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder).
One of the classic OCD symptoms is fear of infection. I have known someone who had this disorder. When it got bad, they could think of nothing else except certain diseases they were afraid of catching. They could not go out of the house. The probability of catching any of the diseases they were afraid of was extremely low, but there was no way to reason with them.
People now seem obsessed with the idea of staying safe from COVID 19. They don't care that the probability of being seriously harmed or dying from it are very low, especially if you are not in a risk category.
I saw posts on facebook by people saying they would absolutely NOT send their kids to school this fall. The risk for children is EXTREMELY low. On the other hand, the risk to their mental health from never seeing their friends might not be very low. I know kids were already socializing a lot on their phones, but now that's all they have, and it can't be healthy.
This virus is a little more dangerous than the flu, and there is no vaccine. But the panic we are seeing over COVID 19 is MANY times greater than anything we ever felt about the flu. I could understand if people were moderately concerned but I do not understand the mass OCD and hysteria.
Well maybe I do understand it -- Americans who hate Trump are scared ****less because they think he is not capable of managing an emergency. They don't feel safe with Trump as president, and that translates to being terrified of the virus.

I'll only address this portion of your misconception of this virus. But first I will say that my own fear of contracting Covid-19 has absolutely nothing to do with Donald Trump -- nothing. It has to do with the death of friends primarily. That's enough for me to keep myself safe and keep others safe by wearing a mask in public.
Now, regarding this being like any other flu. You are entirely and completely misunderstanding this virus. Of course it's very easy for any one of us to use google and find out why it's not like a normal flu. But I understand that people may have busy lives and not enough time to do a little more research on this topic. I'll save you the effort.
This is a virus that's unlike any other pandemic, this virus is 60 times more virulent than the worse coronavirus ever seen by mankind. It not only affects the respiratory system but scientists are discovering it affects the heart, kidneys and circulatory systems.
The rate of death for influenza typically runs about 0.15%, or, 1 death per 750 infections. While the data is changing rapidly, the current death rate of the Covid-19 is about 2.5% of infections. That means that this particular Covid-19 is about 15 times more lethal. If the Covid-19 spread as broadly as influenza, there would be about 10 million deaths.

You are lying, or else somehow missed what everyone else knows. Of those who are known to be infected, the death rate is less than one percent. And there are probably many who are infected but not counted because they were not tested.
I NEVER said it's the same as the flu, and I never said masks should not be worn (there isn't really clear evidence about whether they help or not, but it isn't a major inconvenience or expense).
If you are reasonably careful and if you are reasonably healthy, you probably will not catch it. If you do catch it, you probably will not have a serious case, and the chance of dying is under one percent. Probably MUCH lower for those not in a risk category.

You're wrong, there is global agreement of every country affected with this virus including the WHO and CDC, that masks are absolutely VITAL in preventing the spread of covid-19.
You are wrong again. "This virus is a little more dangerous than the flu".
"Using a more sophisticated calculation called the infection-fatality rate, paired with the past few months’ worth of data, the latest best estimates show that COVID-19 is around 50 to 100 times more lethal than the seasonal flu, on average."
How scientists know COVID-19 is way deadlier than the flu
I know you want to downplay it, but, for example, Texas had over 100 deaths from Covid 19, just yesterday. They had about 85 two days ago, and 60 3 days ago. That is not a good trend in deaths. 3 days is too few numbers to show a general pattern, but that is how NY started out.
The expert authorities often make statements without evidence. Try to find good evidence that masks prevent COVID 19.
And COVID 19 cannot be 50 to 100 times more lethal than the flu, because the death rate for COVID 19, for those who are infected, is less than one percent.
Those numbers are meaningless without any kind of comparison.
The 'experts' are experts for good reason. Covid19 is an airborne respiratory disease, that is a fact. Covering the nose and mouth prevents any airborne viruses to enter the only two ways possible, nose and mouth. It's not rocket science, it's LOGIC.
Imagine this is a violent and abrupt sneeze from a person standing right next to you. I will continue to wear my mask whenever I go out in public, you keep doing what you want to do.

The US Death Rate From The Coronavirus Is 52 Times Higher Than The Flu
Incidentally, you are not 'slightly conservative' you are 'deeply conservative'.
For that matter, just regular breathing. I am sure you were outside when it was cold enough for your breath to be foggy. That white stuff is water vapor, that could be carrying covid 19.
Inside a warm crowded building is even worse. The droplets evaporate at a slower rate when it's warm and the air is still in a crowded room.
The reason I made that analogy is that you can SEE the mist in cold weather. Some people need to see things.
