(NEWSER) – Good luck liking this story: It turns out the State Department blew $630,000 in taxpayer cash "buying fans" on Facebook. A report by the agency's inspector general says the Bureau of International Information Programs' spending on sponsored posts, which occurred between 2011 and March 2013, did boost the bureau's English-language Facebook pages from 100,000 likes to more than 2 million each ... but few of those people were in its older target demographic, and only 2% of those people were actually engaged in commenting, liking, and sharing on the page, the Washington Examiner reports. (Oddly, the report doesn't seem to list the individual pages.)

State Dept. Spent $630K Buying Facebook 'Likes' - Inspector general not a fan of the effort, per new report

Man do we really suck that bad? Have we came to paying people to "like" us? Talk about a waste of money. Paying people to hit like or comment favorably on a status, talk about a waste of effin money.. How low of a ego is that ****?

Yes. It is how a die hard republican friend on FB had a freaking meltdown when it turned out he was listed as liking Barack Obama last year. apparently the campaigns worked with FB to boost their likes.

How absolutely sad is that, to say nothing of pissing away taxpayer dollars, to bolster a government agency's street cred.......

I'm sorry, but I'm laughing it's so sad.....
