Not that I'm a fan of Elon Musk but...

Starlink internet now available for Ukrainians

Man. The heart of these people. So admirable.

More Elon bullshit. To access it you need special units...

As a computer-illiterate old man (84), I of course do not understand anything about the technical aspects, but kudos (and bouquets of orchids) to Mr. M. and anyone else who can help the Ukrainians keep connected to the Internet.

It is wonderful to see what a pariah that unhinged tyrant in the Kremlin has become.

I fear, however, that if (as is likely) Ukraine is put under a puppet government of Russia, world outrage will subside, and that horrible "human being" will again be courted by the powers-that-be -- unless the Russian bigwigs decide that he is too big of a liability.

Don’t you need special equipment to access satellite internet?

We have satellite phones and they run on a completely different platform than regular cell phones, so I can’t imagine this really opens up regular internet access to many, does it?

Tbf, you need special equipment for most Internet (modems).
Modems you can get at the local computer store.. you need a dish and modem specially encoded by Starlink for it to get to work. That is why this is bullshit, because Starlink has until now not been present in most of Europe.. so it is nothing but a freaking PR stunt. Plus who is going to pay the 500+ euros that the system costs?

I think that is the case for any satellite Internet provider. You can't purchase their equipment locally either.
