In the tight-knit world of academic medicine, scientists pride themselves on presenting a united and unflappable face to those outside their ranks. But this week, in a scathing letter, dozens of Stanford University Medical School’s top faculty denounced former colleague Dr. Scott Atlas for promoting what they called “falsehoods and misrepresentations of science.” Atlas, a diagnostic radiologist and senior fellow at the conservative think tank Hoover Institution, was recently appointed by President Donald Trump to the White House coronavirus task force. As an adviser counselor to the president about the virus, he has made controversial statements about controlling the pandemic, which has killed more than 192,000 Americans, through “natural immunity.” He also has urged the reopening of schools and businesses. “Many of his opinions and statements run counter to established science and, by doing so, undermine public-health authorities and the credible science that guides effective public health policy,” according to the letter, signed by Dr. Philip A. Pizzo, former dean of Stanford School of Medicine; Dr. Upi Singh, chief of Stanford’s Division of Infectious Diseases, and Dr. Bonnie Maldonado, professor of epidemiology and population health, and 105 others.

On the conservative “Steve Deace Show” last April, Atlas spoke in favor of allowing the virus to infect younger and healthier Americans, saying their immunity would protect others. He has urged the lifting of business restrictions, telling Fox News on Aug. 24 that “American lives are being destroyed. …. The lockdown must end.” Atlas also said that schools should open as quickly as possible. The Stanford faculty challenge his assertions, saying the preponderance of data shows that that the safest path to herd immunity is through deployment of safe vaccines, not infection; crowded indoor spaces can significantly boost the risk of viral spread; and that illness in children, while uncommon, can lead to serious short-term and long-term consequences. “Failure to follow the science — or deliberately misrepresenting the science – will lead to immense avoidable harm,” the letter warns.

Another charlatan, appointed by Trump only because he is an über-conservative and parrots Trumps non-scientific COVID assertions.

So his former colleagues advocate for keeping businesses and schools shut down until a vaccine is developed? I don't know of any country that has followed such a radical approach.

You didn't read the article, did you? That isn't what the article said. Why are you making a straw man?

Great, then evidently they agree we should be opening businesses and schools, and this is all just BS.

Ah, another straw man. Can you be honest?

Meanwhile, teachers are dying and afraid to go to work.

Oh you want it both ways. What a joke.
Again, a straw man. You obviously did not read the article. You obvisuly don't know people positions, and things are not binary you know. The dishonestly and ignorance of your attempted position is off the charts.

Not where I live.
Where do you live?

I live in Georgia.

So that's what, 5 out of 3.7 million teachers?

I'm sure Georgia's teachers are very comforted by your concern for their well being.
I'm sure they appreciate it, yes.

You're in denial...

You're in denial...

Samantha Mbozi hasn’t even entered a grocery store in the last six months. The 51-year-old just finished chemotherapy a year ago and is taking immunosuppressive drugs for two other illnesses.
Right... just your typical teacher.

I'm sure there's more than one teacher with pre existing conditions.
If you're trying to make a point that people who are too scared to go into grocery stores are scared to go to work, and some of them might be teachers, fine. But that doesn't justify a blanket statement that teachers are afraid to work. Such people exist in every occupation, do you want to claim that everyone is scared to go to work.

Why don't you just save us both time and admit that you don't give a damn about human life?

"....A new survey of about 16,000 teachers by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators found that most had a say in the process, but 52% were critical of the resulting plans in school districts that have released them, said Margaret Ciccarelli, the group’s director of legislative services.
“They don’t currently feel that their district plans appropriately respond to the risk,” Ciccarelli said. Among those who identified themselves as high risk for complications of infection, 67% felt their district’s plan was inadequate...."
"...The legal team at Professional Association of Georgia Educators, a leading advocacy group that counts nearly 100,000 paying members, has been fielding an unprecedented number of calls from worried teachers in recent weeks—about 100 member calls per day. That’s a 98 percent increase in inquiries over the same time period last summer.
PAGE executive director Craig Harper says the agency has heard from some educators worried they’ll be forbidden from teaching pupils in person, but the vast majority have shared “deep concerns” from the other side of the fence...."
