I think it's all thanks to Mr. Pike, and somewhat Mr. Spock. The Orville fanboys' heads are exploding!!!!

Today CBS All Access announced that the second season premiere of Star Trek: Discovery and the AFC championship game drove a record-breaking weekend for the streaming service. According to CBS, All Access added more subscribers in a single weekend than ever before, eclipsing the previous record set during the 2017 series premiere of Star Trek: Discovery by 72%. In addition, the weekend also set a new record for unique viewers.

The link above also has a pretty good idea about how popular other streaming shows are. I was quite surprised by how well DCs streaming service is doing with titans.

The Orville meanwhile started off well at 5 million viewers but has since slipped to 3 million viewers. Leaving many TV analysts predicting its untimely demise, with perhaps creator Seth MacFarlane it's only line of defense.

I actually enjoy the Orville,, Although the last episode seemed to be void of any comedy. Previous episode's always seem to have a combination of seriousness with a splattering of funny humor.

The Orville tells pretty good stories, but Discovery is the higher quality show overall. It's the beginning of a brand new star trek universe. The Orville is simply a spoof.

I was bored a week or so ago and I noticed that there was a new season to The Orville. Now, I hadn't watched the show before because, without seeing it or even knowing anything about it, I had assumed it was a take off on Star Trek. But, as I said, I was bored so I binge watched the first season and then started the second season.

Here's my take: I like the way the episodes deal with current social issues, such as personal relationships...male/female, male/male, etc...gender manipulation, porn, family relations and so on. They deal with these issues with honesty, compassion and non-judgment. I especially liked the episode about the problems the single mother doctor had with her two sons and the way her issues were affected by a "male role model"...even though that role model was a sentient machine. The one thing that I don't like is the way all the characters are hung up on 300 year old culture. I don't think that's realistic. I'd like to see them show more about their own culture...show me their current movies instead of a reference to "Taxi Driver".

I'll continue watching as long as they create new episodes.

Discovery doesn't pay much attention to social issues. It's a continuation, though in a prequel form, of the Star Trek universe. Since I've always loved Star Trek, I'll watch this just as I've watched all of the other series and I especially look forward to seeing where they go with Pike and Spock. Will they tie this season...or a future season...with an episode that shows what ultimately happens to Pike?

To summarize, different shows...both good...I'll be watching them.

This is interesting to me since the first seasons were reversed in this way. I enjoy Orville and I think it's a fun show, but it's a bit forced. I will give it this season to decide if I want to keep watching.

I couldn't take Discovery because of the characters, acting and stories. It felt so far from Star Trek that Orville felt like a better continuation of the series. The fact that the first two episodes were a mutiny and we were supposed to like Michael just bugged me.

Still, Orville isn't exactly amazing and Discovery has tons of hype behind it. I shouldn't be surprised they switched popularity.

EDIT: I also couldn't stand the new Klingons! What the heck was that?

I like Orville but its really not that great. I expected it to be funny, but all I'm seeing is a more light hearted ripoff of Star Trek.

My impression of ORVILLE is that McFarlane was such a Trekkie that he really wanted to do a mostly serious show, but others in the pipeline insisted that he keep in lots of grossout humor because his fans would expect it.

The only thing that's not much like the various TREK shows is that the captain and his first mate have this mixed-up relationship, giving the show the sense of "what if Peter and Lois were space militia?"

Since CBS does not reveal the actual number of viewers, it's hard to objectively state that ST: Discovery is "beating" Orville.

Plus one is on demand and the other is technical not.
