Spiking U.S. gun sales deluge FBI'''s background check system, cause delays | Reuters

(Reuters) - A surge in people buying guns since the coronavirus pandemic began has flooded the FBI’s background check system, causing a spike in the number of delayed checks and allowing gun sales to proceed without them, FBI data disclosed on Tuesday showed.

Gun control advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety obtained FBI data through a Freedom of Information Act request.

There has been a 54% increase in the number of background checks that were delayed past three days in the March through July period, as compared with the same time last year, the data shows.

More than 5% of the 5.86 million background checks conducted during those months this year were delayed past three business days, it showed.

There have been long lines outside gun stores since the pandemic hit in March.

One gun store we frequent tells me sales are up 5000%.

More about anarcho-Communist trying to take over than any virus.

People are seeing the riots across the nation and then throw in the Defund police movement supported by the
democrats. People are scared and want to be able to defend their family if necessary.

What? A Federal bureaucracy is incapable of operating efficiently? Say it ain't so.

Part of it is the stores, some stores will not transfer the firearm until the check has passed, others follow the rule that if four days have gone by they can go forward with the transfer, have run into both cases. And yes the FBI is shorthanded in that department, I actually called the FBI myself on one case and the female agent said they were just swamped with checks to run and could not give me any idea when it would clear. Background checks should never take more than an hour to get done, but when you add the bureaucracy into any issue it always gets hosed. The funny thing is that I have had background checks that took 20 minutes and others that took almost a month to get down, and yet my wife has never had one take longer than 20 minutes, something screwy there.

The current rush on buying started with the Pandemic and was kept going by the protests and riots, thinking the possibility that trump will lose and a Dem will be in power in February will continue the buying frenzy, Firearms and Ammo Companies are doing great these days.

All of this could be avoided if we just required all convicted felons and other prohibited persons to have a big "P" on their driver's license.

I’m not totally opposed but it would seem some sort of federal identification law would need to be passed in order to make that implementable.

Why does it have to be governed by federal law?

That's no excuse for the government to infringe on people's constitutional rights. They need to get their **** together.

Does anyone realize how many laws over night would become a felony if broken?

If you want all 50 states to operate under the same guidelines it would require federal action. If not then there may be up to 50 variations of the P

I never said I want them all to operate under the same guidelines. Every state should be able to choose how they regulate gun ownership, within the confines of the 2nd Amendment. Federal regulations on guns should be limited to those actually significantly related to interstate issues.

That's exactly what the NRA wants. More gun $ales. Their fear tactics are great for sales. The more money the gun makers make, the more money they give the NRA. If they have a slump in sales, the NRA will always have their back and do what it takes to make the lines long down at Gander Mountain.

Ok my apologies I misunderstood your point

Can Texas CCW permit holders skip the background check?

That's why Congress needs to pass national reciprocity.

No worries. I was just focusing on the mechanism, but one could be forgiven for thinking I meant it to be a federal requirement given how many unnecessary federal gun laws we have.

Amazes me that the groups that are against the people buying guns do so much to encourage us to do so.

I don't go out and buy a new gun every time a new crisis occurs. So I suspect these new sales are new gun owners.

and arguably, there is no grounds for federal jurisdiction in this area

that "tactic" only works because of the pavlovian actions of the bannerrhoids-idiots who scream for bans every time there is a well-publicized shooting. If the Democrats wouldn't scream for say "registration" or "waiting periods" in response to shootings (where neither would have had any application in preventing the crimes) such as the Lanza school shooting in Connecticut, then the spike in sales would not happen after a media feeding frenzy
