Comisiones Obreras, the largest trade union in Spain, has warned it would be “devastating” for the Spanish economy if there is no post-Brexit trade deal. The Westminster Government is currently negotiating its future trading relationship with the EU on behalf of the whole of the UK – including its oversees territory Gibraltar. Firms in Spain are heavily reliant on business with The Rock with around 15,000 Spaniards travelling to work in Gibraltar every day.

When your economy collapses, thank a nationalist.

In this case, the Brexit party nerds.

The local economy around the Rock, maybe. The whole economy, hell no. Gibraltar is not even a blip on the Spanish radar. Infact I would say they can't wait til 1st of January to impose very needed actions against money laundering, tax evasion and drug smuggling.

You are right to mock this topic, Godric1970. It is a suspiciously ridiculous article and the bad English should alert us that there is some sort of agendum at play. Take the headline which is all garbled. "Spain ... is needs Gibraltar deal"??? Then there is the claim that "Spain finally admits" as if the Spanish government has been denying that a deal on Gibraltar is important. The Spanish have never suggested that a deal is unimportant. There have been two other threads on Spain's interest in Gibraltar. The opening sentence claims Comisiones Obreras "warned it would be “devastating” for the Spanish economy if there is no post-Brexit trade deal" but the article does not say in what way other than to state "Firms in Spain are heavily reliant on business with The Rock". What firms and how are they not only reliant on business with Gibraltar but heavily so. This is then explained as the number of workers who commute from Spain to Gibraltar. But workers crossing the border to work in Gibraltar makes the argument that it is Gibraltese businesses which need Spanish workers and these, not Spanish firms which will be in trouble. The whole article got the argument upside-down. Finally, we get the true admission of the whole topic that it is not Spanish firms after all but "A Brexit without an agreement on Gibraltar would be devastating for the economy of the area" not Spain. What the union meant was that Spanish workers might lose their jobs. Of course the union is concerned for its members but so also are the firms, not in Spain but in Gibraltar which stand to lose their source of labor. Indeed, it is no coincidence that 98% of Gibraltar voters cast their ballots to remain in the European Union. The article is a mess.

Yeah, it will be a hard hit for The Rock if they suddenly can't get their work force. And of course a hard hit for the workers, since they lose their jobs. It will be a annoying thing for Spain, but certainly not threatening the whole Spanish economy.
