Been some conversation about flags and flag burning and this is just a hypo I thought interesting. You're out walking with your bucket of water (as everyone does sometime throughout the day) and you happen upon an angry protest complete with flag burning. The fire from the flag actually ignites the person lighting it and very soon, his clothes will be fully ablaze if someone doesn't act. What would you do, what WOULD you do?

poll on the way

Ok, top 4 include a little commentary which, I learned is not always so appreciated, so included a yes and a no with no comments. Happy now - you know who you are? :2razz:

Just walk away. If someone is of the mentality that it's a good idea to burn the flag then they're probably also of the mentality that it's a good idea to sue people who try to help you.

I would help put out the fire, then ridicule the crap out of that person.

Easy peezy. Put them out. Just because they're being disrespectful doesn't give me the right to see someone possibly burn to death. That to me on a personal level is murder. A far more heinous crime. Note: Yes. I know. Legally speaking its not murder. But I would FEEL like it was for myself. I wouldn't judge anyone else as a murderer if they decide differently.

Put it out. Even if it was some KKK asshole who set himself on fire lighting a cross or effigy I would save him if I could. I'm not going to let someone die over symbolism.

I will use this occasion to listen to some Johnny Cash.

The least one could do is to stomp it out. Whether or not one gets a few extra shots in to the ribcage while doing so is another matter.

First....burning the flag after cutting it into squares is the only way to properly retire a flag. Fact. Second, if I DO encounter someone who has caught themselves on fire while in the process of burning the flag, properly or not, I am going to assist that person, hands down.

Now, if they were being an ass (most likely), I WILL ridicule them for it, and if possible, ensure that their friends and family know, and pretty much everyone else they know as well.

Those extra shots might be important to making sure it's fully out.

It's only a piece of cloth. If you'd let someone burn for that, I'd suggest you're as much a whackjob as s/he is.

From 0 to righteous indignation in 10 posts.

I'll take this POS hypothetical one further...

I don't carry buckets with me but if some angry old guy vet is waving a torch around proclaiming only 'Merican flags can fly on this side of the border but as he attempts to burn the local carniceria's Mexican flag he sets himself on fire...

Well I'd walk across the street, knock his dumb ass down and piss on him...

best I can do under the circumstances... :peace

Of course I would help. It *might* be after I am done laughing but I would help. No reason for that person to lose their life in a haze of stupidity.

That doesn't take this hypo "one step further", that changes the hypo. What's difficult about answering the question as asked?

Not the least bit difficult, and it does take the POS hypo further- refines the data on who is the incompetent pyro and what I'd realistically have with me to fight the fire... ;)

Put it out ASAP. However one thinks of the flag, I think it takes a pretty terrible person to just stand there and watch someone die one of the most agonizing possible deaths just because they find the person's politics offensive. I'd say they're a way worse person than the flag burner probably is, and I can't help but find it kind of anti-American as well. Thinking someone should die for exercising their speech is pretty draconian.

The guy's demise would not be the fault or responsibilty of anyone but himself.

For my purposes, the flag being burned is important (and hell - part of the actual title ). You want to change that for some reason that I'm rapidly losing interest in.

In duty to aid jurisdictions, it could be considered murder-2 or manslaughter.
