Since then, that precinct chairwoman, Dorrie O’Brien, and a small group of her supporters have put forth a formal motion to remove Shafi as vice chairman because of his religion, a motion that is slated for a vote on Jan. 10. To Easton, who opposes the measure, the move is an embarrassment to the Republican Party. And to Shafi, it amounts to exactly what he believed did not exist in the United States when he arrived here 28 years ago: a religious test.

Over the past week, the movement to oust Shafi has drawn loud condemnation from Texas GOP leaders, including Land Commissioner George P. Bush and House Speaker Joe Straus. On Saturday, the Texas GOP Executive Committee passed a formal resolution reaffirming the GOP’s commitment to religious freedom and seeking to distance the party from the xenophobia that it fears the motion against Shafi may embolden. In Texas, it would not be the first time Republicans have tried to block Muslims from participating in GOP leadership roles. A Houston City Council staffer attempted, unsuccessfully, to block a Republican Harris County precinct chairman in 2016.
Those trying to remove him due to Religion should be booted from the Party

Very curious how many "some Republicans" actually is. Based on the article, its 1 and an unnamed number of "supporters", who may or may not actually exist.

Unfortunately the Republican party pick up some of the bigots who left the Democrat party.
The political philosopher John Locke said that government office should be open to all except for Catholics and atheists.
Catholics because they had sworn an allegiance to a foreign crown (which the pope was in the 18th century),
and atheists because they lacked a moral compass.
A Muslim who openly stated that they believed Sharia to supersede our laws, or refused to support our laws and constitution,
perhaps should be excluded from office, but short of that, I see not reason to exclude anyone.

I doubt the party would be holding a vote on this if it were only one person who wanted it. Xenophobia is strong right now, having been reinforced and exploited for political purposes by some on the right.

The same would then apply to Christians that US Laws/Constituition should be superseded by Gods Laws? Yes? No?

Ever since the voting right act was passed in the '60 the Republican Party has been a dump bin for the bigoted elements of the Democratic Party.

Absolutely!

The article doesn't support your statements.

Yea, I am surprised the Klan survived being excluded as the militant wing of the Democrat party.
For the most part the Republicans do not tolerate that type of BS.

Here ya go Sam. More information
Some links.
More than 1 and clearly more are supportive of this
And those wanting his removal have been active and pushing this for many months.

[Dorrie] O’Brien declined to discuss Thursday night why she made the motion to remove Shafi, but she recently posted on Facebook that Shafi is “a practicing Muslim and a MB (Muslim Brotherhood) operative.”

“If it wasn’t so dangerous to Texas and to our republic, I could let it go,” she wrote. “But it IS that dangerous and I can’t just sit by and watch it happen. I have to speak out regardless of threats of lawsuits to silence me or threats that I’ll be personally responsible for turning Tarrant County blue, or attempts at public disdain to shame me into shutting up.”

It’s not just one wacky Republican. Another one, Sara Legvold, posted a far lengthier rant against Shafi last month on the Facebook page for a group called “Protect Texas”:

Till now anyway. In the past they've given out some crumbs during political campaigns to secure votes, but denied these elements any real power. That was the Southern Strategy. Unfortunately, with Trump, another dumpee from the Democrats, they have now gained the ascendancy.

I love people trying to pretend that republicans are not racist. Where the hell have you been the last couple decades? Obvious republicans racists, that actually have won elections. Trump as president for crying out loud. But please, tell us most republicans are not LOL Then they are perfectly acceptable with republicans pandering to racists, which is just as bad as being racist oneself

This sounds like pure xenophobia. I searched around for any basis regarding the claims that the doctor supports and wants to implement Sharia law in America, and can find nothing. What I did find is that the Rep party is condemning the actions of a few and hopefully, these bigots will be weeded out.

Says the Democrat party of the KKK and Jim Crow, and the party who fought to keep slavery. Republicans have been way ahead of you for decades, if not centuries.

OMG god, conservatives are morons, just keep throwing out this stupid line. Democrats back then are republicans today. Who's the racist party today? Republicans for damn sure.

Christ almighty, political forums just draw the dishonest idiots, don't they?

The racist party today is the one that sees skin color in every human being. The ones screaming "RACIST!!!" actually are the racists. The fact the Democrats use race to divide and as a weapon tells me that they never got past their deeply-help belief that skin color matters.
Remember who sent the first black man to Congress? It was REPUBLICANS, my friend.

See, we were enlightened loooooooooooooooong ago, while your pointy white hat covered your faces. Now, nothing has changed except the color of your balaclavas.

Republicans were at one time, ahead of Democrat. You're living in the past if you think that's true now. Funny how attractive the Republican party has become to bigots. You like to pretend that the KKK is still Democrat. Keep lying to yourself if it makes you feel better but don't bother trying to pass it off to the rest of us. We live in 2018, not 1918.

That's back when we had a northern democratic wing and a southern, bigoted democratic wing of the party. We offloaded the later onto the GOP when we had LBJ sign the civil rights act and Nixon instituted the GOP's Southern strategy to snatch up that bigot wing. Enjoy!

The Democrats are the party of intolerance. VERY small tent right now. Full of leftists, progressives and aggressive socialists. The Dem party doesn't even exist any longer because they let radicals take it over. Once Pelosi and Schumer die off, it's all globalists, socialists and communists.
Don't worry. Reps will be here to save America from you and your racist past.

So 2 party officials in one Texas county are on record asking for him to be removed.

Do you seriously think that the county party would go to the trouble and expense of holding a vote for the benefit of just 2 people? How did these 2 get into positions of power if they had no support from the rank and file?
