NEW YORK — A small aircraft crashed into a high-rise building on Manhattan's Upper East Side Wednesday,

Local news reports quoted New York Fire Department officials as saying two people were confirmed dead. Officials said there is no indication the incident was a result of terrorism.

The crash set off a raging fire that sent a pillar of gray smoke over the city, police said. Witnesses reported seeing a gigantic fireball come out of the building, police said.

Flames could be seen shooting from windows on two upper floors of the 50-story building, near the East River. Burning debris fell from the tower, and a column of gray smoke rose over the city.

They have said no reason to suspect terrorism yet.

Nope. Still, I bet the people of NY are having severe flashbacks and the 1st responders having butterflies!

NORAD has fighters airborne watching/as a precaution, but there is every indication of an accident!

This is terrible and from what I have read and heard is most likely just an accident due to aviation failure.

I wonder what would cause the pilot to not crash into the river? Unless he/she was aiming for the river but lost altitude to fast.

* I just heard that they believe the only fatalities were the two people on board the airplane.

Oddly enough, I was reading "The Pet Goat" when this happened.

I'm watching TV and they are interviewing people who saw the plane crash and they all said it took the fire department and police department at least 15-20 minutes to arrive on the scene.

Is that normal for New York?

This may not be a terrorist "attack"

It could certainly be a dry run to see how America reacts. Have we learned anything since 9-11? how does the government respond? etc.

Certainly I could just be way off base.....Im just thinkin, if I was a terrorist, I would want to see how things have changed since the last big attack.

A plane crashed.
People died....
Its sad, its a tragedy.
Our government's military responded adequately with fighter jets in the air.
They will interview 500 people who's tale is "sooooo dramatic", but in the end, we know everything most people need to know.

Nothing more to see here folks.

Hope you're right.

There is just no precedent for this "accident" I just don't know how you accidentally crash in to a building downtown?

News agencies are reporting the plane was registered to New York Yankees Pitcher Cory Lidle!

Were you reading it to school chioldren as part of your national school initiative, Mr. President?

Oh, just a jealous and lame attempt at bashing the president, I see.

but I thought only muslim terrorists only fly into NYC buildings? It turns out this plane was a Cirrus designed plane that has a parachute that deploys in case of failure. My question is: why wasn't the chute deployed? This was an accident and if this lame brain pilot could've deployed this chute in this accident and didn't--he's a incompetent boob who should've never have had his flight license. Get this stupidity off the news and may the Orwellian memory hole swallow this quickly.

Actually, it's called a joke.

I've got some others brewing too....

Like "When it says Lidle's Lidle's Lidle's on the Label Label Label you can expect to hit a high rise, high rise, high rise on the navel navel navel." But it's just not as good, ya see?

Oh, so you chose a tragedy like this to make jokes? sorry, not buying it. You saw an opportunity to take a lame swipe at the president. admit it.

I'm dressing up as the twin towers and my bf is dressing up as an airplane for Halloween. Last year, I got a yellow hazmat suit and attached baby doll arms and legs and went as Planned Parenthood. The year before? I went as a priest and my bf went as my altar boy. So I chose all tragedies as times for jokes. Don't like it? Put me on block if you're so sensitive.

Reminds me of the day a good friend was allowed to return to his apartment in the financial district of Manhattan. He turned over a fallen flower pot on his fire escape and found a human thumb.

Yeah, you're a real comedian. Your mother must be so proud.

I lost 8 friends that day
and i have no problem with that costume
most people deal with tragedy through humor, at the appropriate place and time
I would not recommend doing it in NYC tho

If all you got are personal attacks, maybe you shouldn't try and debate.

:( Its pretty sad that an accident occurs that has claimed 2 lives and threatens many more, and the discussion on this thread has resorted to this!

Can't we say that this was a tragic accident and merely leave it at that with at least faked civility, if nothing else?
