Sloppy mask wearing.

All that being said, people are morons. Some people just don't care. I think a mandate without some education and proper supply of effective masks is not ideal. I still think having people wear masks is better than not based on the studies I've seen.
You're more of an optimist than I am.

By April I was resigned to the belief that no amount of masking, social distancing, lockdowns, or vaccinating--taking into account the real world--will ever stamp out the virus, and that we should all inevitably plan to get it.

Not that I don't "play my part". I'm working from home. I've worn masks in indoor public places. I "social distance" and limit my contact with others. When the vaccine comes out, I'll get vaccinated if the vaccine proves to be more than 50% effective within a year.

But I do all of the above on the speculative off-chance that it will do some good, as a gesture of goodwill toward my fellow man. Deep down, I doubt any of it will do any good except as a big, fat public placebo.

I also have trouble breathing in a mask, get light headed, etc. So I ordered some face shields. They just came today, but now I'm reluctant to wear it in public because I haven't seen anyone around here wearing one ever. It makes me feel like I'm suited up for Halloween or something. It's always something, right?
Just be glad you don't have to wear the face shield upside-down (like a dog cone), as recently mandated in Maine. :(

Ugh, every time I see someone with their nose out, I want to say "hey moron, viruses can travel through your nose". Basic biology asshole- the ear, nose mouth and throat are connected"...

It's a daily struggle for me to bite my tongue! I fear the stupidity of mankind more than the C19.

I went back to work this week. It's mandatory for employees to wear masks inside or outside if social distancing is not possible. Here are the mistakes I saw.

1) People with their noses out. I don't know how many people I had to ask to tuck their nose in. Some masks are crap and constantly fall down. Just wear a surgical mask instead of having to figit all day long.

2) People taking their mask off to speak to somebody.

3) Several people seem to keep their mask in their office. They will walk through the whole building maskless until they get to their office upon arrival.

4) Nobody wears a mask in the building that has the time clock.

5) I saw one girl who had three surgical masks hanging up to dry out and use again.

6) People walking into the building and then gradually putting on the mask after passing several people.

7) People just straight up not wearing the mask. They do sometimes but not always.

I'm sure there is more. This goes on everywhere. If we could just tighten up on the basics we would be doing much better right now.

One thing people aren't paying attention to is the fact that science is moving at lightning speed to develop not only vaccines but also strong antiviral medications, which while not able to PREVENT COVID, will indeed lessen the severity if administered in a timely manner at symptom onset.
The general idea is that most of the antivirals will be nasal sprays, and will work somewhat similar to Tamiflu. It's likely that the antivirals will be in the pipeline before the vaccines, so really healthy people can take advantage of them and manage to get over COVID with less damage.
Yes, they will have to quarantine but at least they won't be risking death or serious lifetime damage.

The point being, we need to be patient because the sacrifices are temporary and if ALL of US would just cooperate, the amount of time would be shortened drastically. Instead too many of us are behaving like a kid with poison ivy, the more we scratch, the worse it gets.

Sigh, been watching other countries where they DID have to cooperate...YES BY FORCE! (again...TEMPORARY)
And the reality is, they flattened it quicker and now they are reopening.
Yes, they are experiencing small flareups here and there and going back into short lockdowns in some local areas.
Yes, it is fits and starts but still, at least they are able to reopen somewhat.

Our parents and grandparents had to ration almost everything in shared sacrifice for WW2, and we're just being asked to stay home as much as possible, wear masks, sanitize and stay six feet apart....for a WHILE.

I'd do that (wear a face shield) if I could ditch the mask. But our law doesn't allow for that. :(

Must be a bit scary to see so many not taking masks seriously. Stay safe.

Some people have trouble breathing w/ it over their nose. I am one. The last time I took a cab, the driver told me right off he was okay with me taking it off my nose - he could see my breathing was laboured. (and I was coming home from a medical appt so don't say I should have stayed home)

Not everyone has access to surgical masks.

Another thing - the ones I have ride up my nose and poke my eyes. I've had scratches on my cornea before and they are extremely painful. So, I'm constantly adjusting it. (I've ordered a cloth mask in the hopes it stays put better)

Have you thought about getting a face shield? That would be a reasonable alternative.

The US has done a very poor job of educating people of the do's and don'ts of mask wearing. This applies to wearing gloves as well.

We were basically told to wear anything. Anything at all. Tee-shirt material? Fine. A bandana? Sure.

I live in Maine and eat out about once a week. I don't know what site you got that from, but it explains the face contraptions some of the waitresses are wearing. They're not upside down face shields, but they are clear plastic. They only come up as far as the mouth though. No one is wearing a dog collar. You should seriously consider finding a new site, if you actually believe this stuff.

By the way, Janet Mills is doing a good job; we are the safest state in the country right now, and she's still keeping an eagle eye out.

I work in a medical office...I see patients arrive unmasked, half masked, wearing poorly fitting masks or wearing filthy masks. I've seen used masks pulled out of purses/bags and passed out to others in their group or offered to strangers who might need one. It completely grosses me out to see how poorly handled/worn these mask are. Utterly disgusting in most cases. I don't get how anyone with half a brain could put on a dirty mask, especially one worn by someone else. Surgical masks are meant to be worn 1 time not over and over. Cloth masks are meant to be washed after use. I can't imagine how much bacteria/germs are in/on those masks that people are so casually tossing around, touching constantly, putting down on tables they eat from, etc.

To all those who feel the need to badmouth the VA, this is what we get approximately once every two weeks courtesy of the VA:

(100 per bag)

Oh yeah, remember when I had to brew my own ethanol because of the shortage?
Karen's doctor laughed and said he will make sure we have at least one 32 oz. bottle of 91% isopropyl every month for the duration, and we currently have nine boxes of disposable gloves, some XL (for me) some medium and some small (for Karen)

And I still use my UV-C light, something I picked up myself.

The source article is from Maine Public Radio. I included the link.

If nobody is actually following the governor's orders, I can certainly believe this (and I certainly don't blame them), but how do you explain the announcement going out over MPR?

And that might have been the very first thing we needed to do.
During WW2, during the Great Depression, during a LOT of crises, extra efforts were made to educate the public to protect them.
I honestly expected to get bombarded with a constant barrage of public service announcements and 30 minute videos from CDC et al.
I was shocked when none were forthcoming.

For those that wear cloth masks, please wash them daily.....have several so they can be changed out when being cleaned.

At the end of the day, a cloth mask is a filter full of bio-critters that need to be killed.

And when wash/dry isn't feasible, get a cheap UV-C light and at least just stick it on top of the little UV-C light for ten minutes between uses.

Where are you getting your news from?

Literally everything I've read in the past two weeks clearly indicates that infection rates are booming again worldwide, including countries with the strictest lockdown measures--Italy, India, Australia, Korea. There's nothing "small flareups here and there" about it. As soon as a lockdown is lifted, the virus goes on as though lockdown never happened.

Hopefully this will change when... if... they ever manage to come up with an effective vaccine. That was the original purpose of the lockdowns. Because half-measures like masking and social distancing simply don't work well enough.

You're few months late, but welcome to the real world. This is why mandatory mask mandates are useless. Unless of course, spreading the virus is the actual goal.

At work we go to a sexual harassment presentation each year. I'd figure it would be mandatory for all businesses to have something like this for C19 safety regulations. An instructional video would have sufficed. Maybe before getting stimulus checks people should have been required to watch a video and take a quiz at the end. Certainly some sort of education was needed and yes it should have been more towards the beginning.

How does wearing a surgical mask, as opposed to any other mask, free you from fidgeting?

I personally find them to be the worst, because they press right up against your nose and mouth when you inhale, instead of giving you some breathing space.

I don't understand why nobody makes reusable masks that have a firm shape, and don't collapse into your face when you breathe.

There really shouldn't be the need for a mandate. People should just do the right thing.

I see the most fidgeting from those with poorly fitted masks that fall below their noses. The surgical masks don't fall like that.

this is all on Trump

nothing has ever been done so half ass

How is no mask mandate better? Not all people are making these mistakes.

Because this could possibly be worse than no mask mandate. There is already evidence that some face coverings are worse than no mask. There is simply no science behind mask mandates that doesn't rely heavily on Chinese data.

There really shouldn't be the need for a mandate. People should just do the right thing.

Liberty? Shirley you jest.

I watched a woman pulling down her mask, adjusting her dentures, putting her mask back up. Top that one.

If Gavin Newsom can't make everyone in CA wear a mask, how is Trump going to accomplish that nationwide?
