Trumpists of course are completely and totally blind to the dangers of what they are doing.
Singapore is an incredibly well run country and for them to say such chilling things…
Is unbelievable.
Hes 100% right.

It's fine that he would rather rely on the WTO. But the Globalists control the WTO. His country is small enough that the Globalists don't care about Singapore, but the same cannot be said about the US.
Bottom line is that Trump MUST pay attention to what's best for the US...not what's best for Singapore.

That says it all.
WTO is a system that worked for everyone except the good'ol USA. Of course they want to keep the system going. Free trade never was free trade. Other countries cashed in on the mighty America consumer and his/her propensity to use debt to fund their lifestyles. We have a trillion dollar trade deficit and 12 trillion dollars of consumer debt to show for it. Clearly it's not sustainable. What needs to happen is America needs to once again become a exporter nation, we need to rebuild middle class manufacturing jobs, instead of sending dollars overseas other countries should be buying our products in return for us buying theirs. It's going to be a uphill battle to get there but you got to start somewhere. This is the first step.
Thank you for posting that, although the possibility and reality is chilling, it's comforting to hear someone who is speaking with intelligence and reason. Something which is greatly lacking in what used to be known as the United States of America, now it seems to be an isolated foreign hellhole.

Build a world trading system without the USA at its centre.

jetboogieman:I think this ignores that, that trading system is held together at the end of the day, by the stability of the US and the might of its military.
We cannot be blind to the harsh reality, it’s not as simple as saying okay, we’re gonna do this without the US, what the US, setup, was a rules based global order that meant that instead of just taking your neighbors oil, you paid for it and everyone benefited.
What the Singapore PM is saying, is once that collapses, regional conflict over resources becomes more likely, that could become global.
The EU, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Korea as an example, have nowhere near the ability to fill that role combined and our interests won’t necessarily align that we will, Trump makes that incredibly difficult.
So, we’ll see, unless congress gets so much pressure from constituents that they remove that power and stop the President from doing these things, the world will have to navigate these extremely treacherous waters and as the PM said…
“The risks are real and the stakes are high”.
Relative GDP size should have nothing to do with trade balance. Counties with a small GDP size should also have a small amounts of exports regardless of how many consumers America has. That should be the limiting factor.dmpl:
I suspect that your understanding of international trade is at best rudimentary. There is a reason that other countries cannot buy American exports at the level that the US buys foreign imports. The US receives huge amounts of capital in-flows which other nations do not have access to. These flows of profits from American-owned transnational corporations, financial institutions' fees, service fees, licencing fees, intellectual property rents, technology up-grade fees, entertainment copyright payments, etc. make it possible for American businesses and consumers to buy far more imports than American businesses can export. You Americans (at least as an aggregate are awash in foreign capital flows which are for the most part denied to all but the most powerful other countries around the globe.
It is those capital in-flows which are vulnerable to foreign state interdiction and taxation. As MR. Trump's behaviour worsens, and he does more damage to the global economy, foreign states will move to tax and interdict those in-flows and that will really hurt the US economy far more than a goods trade deficit has ever done. When that starts, the Singapore PM's worries will become realized and hot trade wars fought with weapons will begin.

Take Roddy's advice. Your posts are looking foolish.Relative GDP size should have nothing to do with trade balance. Counties with a small GDP size should also have a small amounts of exports regardless of how many consumers America has. That should be the limiting factor.
He is correct, and what I hope comes out of it is a new rules based order built off the old one, but with nations interested in the stability that brings. I said it at the beginning of this tariff fiasco that now is the time for other nations and economic blocs to form an alternative structure that aligns likeminded nations to aid in their own growth. The time of the US as a stable ally and partner are fading away, and mainly because of the current leadership. Regardless of the results of the 2028 election, it's time other nations to start thinking post US as a means of defending their own interests in the face of this kind of instability.

Diamonds.. Lesotho. Imbalance because a tiny country produces a commodity in high demand.. now tariffed at 50%Relative GDP size should have nothing to do with trade balance.
