People that voted yes got a problem with the truth. This is what neocon's have turned this country into. So read it and weep.
On the contrary, those who think this is acceptable behavior from a high school teacher place little value in professionalism or integrity. The task of a high school teacher is to teach the course syllabus... not dispense or proselytize personal fringe notions.

I don't consider the truth "proselytizing".

Ok I know you have been waiting for my brilliant reply so with out further delay here we go.

Does he have the right to have his views? Yes he does.
Does he have the right to voice his views? Yes he does.
Does he have the right to voice his views to high school students in class? NO he does not.

No teacher has the right to voice their personal views on race, religion, or politics in a classroom.

Should he be fired? Is this first time? If so then no. He should he warned.
But if it continues then yes fire him.

However if he at anytime calls for Violence then he should be fired immediately.

He can always teach in France...:2wave:

I should have my kids come on here and tell everyone how some of the teachers at their high school in Louisiana pushed their religious and political views in the classroom (ie, the "rightness" of being Christian and supporting George Bush). It made them feel so included.

I agree that this teacher shouldn't be saying these things to his students but the road runs both ways and teachers are getting away with it everyday. Most especially in small southern towns that no one is paying attention to.

He wasn't speaking "truth", he was campaigning, editorializng, preaching, proselytizing, doing something that wasn't related to the course he was hired to teach.

That's why he should be fired.

Its the failure of people to understand this simple concept that has turned this country into a disorganized mass of whiny vermin.

What you consider the 'truth' has no place in a high school Geography classroom. That's why you're here instead Billo... this community is smart enough to recognize crappola when we hear it. ;)

Is it "my" truth the entire world hates America because of our current foreign policy? Is it "my" truth our national debt is a result of our current fiscal policy? Is it "my" truth that his entire class emphatically supports him? And finally, is it "my" truth that you are trying to spin this into "my" truth?

Then that teacher should be fired too. If he actually pushed religion and talked about how supporting Bush was right....Fire his ***.

It seems like the wacky professor syndrome is filtering down to high school level. That can't be allowed to happen. College is different. But to allow that to go on in high school is really an attempt at grooming and brainwashing our nations youth.

I turn on Reich Wing talk every so often. It's kind of like wearing shoes that are too tight, it feels good when you take them off.

Anyway - while Dubai, Iraq, and 100,000 people protesting Bush's tour, and 34% approval ratings are the major stories, the reich wing is talking about this one teacher. I call it the "distraction du jour." It's a non-story except in right wing world. But to suck people into this debate is to fail to address the real issues in the country.

That said - I would have to take a look at this teacher's contract. Also - what was the next sentence the teacher asked the class? Any teacher knows that sometimes you have to ask a provocative question of HS students to illicit a response. What is the geography class curriculum? Does it make mention of addressing topics of the day?

I also think that the teacher was right on the money until he compared Bush to Hitler. Bush isn't Hitler. Bush is not Hitler. For one thing, Hitler was a decorated frontline combat veteran. ;)

Another question is: Was it legal for the student to tape record the class? Usually it is not, except with the teacher's permission. If the student violated that rule, he could face expulsion.

Michael Savage and his ilk would be fired in a heartbeat from most schools if he expressed his bigotry and intolerance for diversity in the classroom. Except maybe in Kansas. ;)

No matter what else is going on in the country and the world parents must always take what is going on in our nations classrooms seriously!

It sounds to me like he was stating his opinions as fact which is far different then asking questions to illicit a response.

I also think that the teacher was right on the money until he compared Bush to Hitler.

You are perfectly within your right to agree with any or all of his opinions that doesn't mean they belong in the classroom setting.

Bush isn't Hitler. Bush is not Hitler. For one thing, Hitler was a decorated frontline combat veteran. ;)

To many that would be a funny joke. If a teacher told it in class I'd be angry.

I wonder what prompted the kid to tape the class. He probably told his parents what a whack job he had for a teacher and they didn't believe it.

If the teacher was doing nothing wrong then why would he have something to fear from a student bring a tape recorder to school? The teacher works for us the tax payers to teach our kids, how he does his job teaching our kids is our business.Everything that that goes on in that classroom is our business.

It's not about the opinion of the author of that article I just used that to get the exact quotes of what this guy said. I heard him say it on the radio so those are not mis quotes. And conservatism is the antithesis to statist fascism, your ideology is much closer to that of Nazi's than my own.

I'm sure the ideas of collectivism and social justice fit in nicley in with the holocaust. Trajan, your the only one who thinks this. You're wrong. Every single political analyst will disagree with you. That's why if you look at a political compass or line you will see that nazism is on the right with republicans, while socialism is on the left along with democrats. look.

The examples you are giving is biased rhetoric. What that teacher stated in his classroom are irrefutable facts.

Yes liberals love the state, they think the state is the end all and be all and the cure to all mans troubles.
Yeah, ever since Bush was elected all the liberals are vociferously proclaiming how investing more power in the state is the remedy for all of man’s troubles. Let us pray that you stalwart conservatives will always be there to stop their mad rush to mutilate the Constitution and aggrandize their leader.

Trajan Octavian Titus said:
No conservative has proposed anything like that(dictating what type of sex you aren't allowed to have), some are opposed to gay marriage but that is a far different thing than outlawing homosexuality.
Sorry, Trotts, my bad. Of course a conservative would never dream of making sodomy illegal. It must be a nefarious plot concocted by one of those liberals that PTSD and NP are always talking about. By the way, whoever said anything about outlawing homosexuality? Do try not to jump to tangents, it would be sad for a self-proclaimed stoner evince a longer attention-span than yourself.

Ya first off we're at war skippy during which the president is granted broader Constitutional authority, secondly are you saying that FDR, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were fascists?
Secondly, I was saying nothing of the kind. My post quite clearly stated that wiretapping without oversight is far from antithetical to a fascist regime. (which is exactly what you had posited in the post I was quoting) So, you are now saying that simply because three democrats have done this in the past, the entire practice becomes completely unpalatable to fascist regimes?
Firstly, we’re only at war if Congress declares it, and the records seem to indicate that they haven’t done that since 1942. Sure, you can say that the president has gotten broader authority, but until Congress passes that formal declaration of war, it ain’t the Constitution that’s doing the broadening.

Trajan Octavian Titus said:
That's something you just made up. Please do go on, and next time won't you try using a little thing called facts to back up your ill informed opinions the truthiness isn't going to fly with me.
Oh, you caught me. Conservatives would never categorically deny parenthood to a specific class of individuals (gays). I guess I’ll have to stop making **** up and having it printed in newspapers across the country. http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2006-02-20-gay-adoption_x.htm?POE=NEWISVA
Thank you for showing us just how opposed to truthiness you are, Trotts.

A major issue in this country right now is the bias that's been corrupting the news media for more than forty years. That it's now prevalent in the classroom threatening our students is a very real issue indeed.

A better question is why did the student feel the need to record the guy in the first place. That tells us that this teacher had a history of shooting his mouth off inappropriately.

Also, as far as I'm concerned, the kid did nothing wrong in recording his teacher, it's an efficient way of making up notes he may have missed. It's not like the teacher was giving a copyrighted lecture...hell, he was supposed to be teaching geography, and it was the school's time, anyway, not his.

Scarecrow said, "Sure, fire him. This whole notion of tenure for teachers is stupid, anyway. The guy may have a guaranteed freedom to speak as he will....but only on his own time. When he's at work, he's on company time, and as a teacher, his flapping lips are the representatives of his employer. If the school board disagrees with the noises he makes, they should be free to let him go. It's their job, not his. He's only filling a spot. Any other qualified teacher can fill that position just as easily.

If he wants to get paid for making blatantly political comments, he should either run for political office or become a reporter for the New York Times."

EXCELLENT POST AND SO TRUE.

Good golly we actually agree doughgirl!

So true...anything the teacher says in the classroom is the intellectual property of the school, in my opinion. Plus, it is common practice for students to record lectures. I certainly did when I was in school.
