I'm referring to this post by easyt65. Apparently some believe the government shouldn't help the men and women who have served and fought for this country when they run into issues with the health care system. I personally believe the American government has an obligation to provide some sort relief for American vets. What about you?

I think it depends on the procedures. Something that is to save or extend their life fine but not open reign on anything.

I agree.. ditto.

If that person was injured or contracted a condition/disease that was caused as a result of being on active duty, YES, that person should be treated at government expense until that condition is corrected, or if need be, for life.

If a person served a few years and got out. Sorry, no.

if someone got PTSD or something, then sure. Otherwise nno.

Re: Should the U.S. goverment provide assistance to veterans with health care problem

I said yes but I have reservations.
Actually retired military people (and their spouses and children)are covered under Tricare (military insurance). However those who do not retire but simply dont' reenlist after their tour is over are not covered. Those who are injured or wounded (on the job) to the point where they cannot stay in the military are also covered.
I dont' think it is economically feasible to cover those who dont' retire from the military either through injury or twenty plus years. The military is a job and a career and if people want the retirement benefits they need to stay in and earn them.

Without question, I also don't think they should have to pay taxes, they have payed what they owe for a lifetime.

Why? Are you aware that there are many military jobs that are non-deployable, should someone who doesnt' get deployed and only works for the military for four years reap the benefits of a system that is already overwhelmed? I haven't seen my doctor in four years, I've seen PA's (patient advisors) I've seen nurses, I haven't seen my doctor, I don't even know who my real doctor is supposed to be and we're 23 years in with. I just can't see how we could afford to give military benefits to nonretirees.
Look I'm not trying to put anyone who had been in the military down, it's a hard job, it can be a horrible job but it is a job and like any if you want the retirement beneifts then you have to work for them for all the years it takes. It's not putting their service down especially if they've been deployed but let's face it part of the job is knowing that you may have to fight and while that may be valiant, it is part of the job.
Many people leave the military with a general discharge for various reasons, their weight, inability to lead or follow, not taking classes regularly etcetc. Those who do that should not be given free healthcare simply because they were once in the military or were even once deployed
The military is strained to the breaking point, we have housing shortages all over the place, we have a divorce rate that is skyrocketing, we have wounded living in horrible conditions while awaiting medical treatment. We cannot afford to overload our system by giving benefits for anyone other then retirees.

I agree; you'd better darn well choose your field while you're young, and then stick with it, if you expect retirement benefits.
It's that way in the private sector; I wouldn't expect the military to be much different. Why would it?
What other field or occupation- even a hazardous one- can you work in for a couple of years, and then expect some sort of lifelong benefits?
I don't see how that's reasonable.

The only way the government should pay for health care problems of vets is if those health problems were acquired during or a as a result of military service.
