Should the Physically Handicapped be given Free Transportation when out in Public? Ride the Buses and trains for Free?

When we implement change so that the physically handicapped can have access to buildings, Clear Space so that they can park up front in parking lots, and create special doors and ramps for access. Should they still have to pay just like anyone else would, that is not handicapped?

Should they be given discounts when it comes to paying as all else does due to the fact they are handicapped? Despite whatever laws and concessions having been already made and given.

An example would be Paying for parking.....even though they get to park up front and closer to the building. Should they have to pay the same rate as everyone else does. Get a discount? Or get to park for Free? Based on their Physical handicap.

I think they should have to pay just like everyone else. Concessions have already been made to ensure they have adequate access to facilities and have a right to work (when and where they are capable of doing so)

As long as the handicapped are given equal access that is what counts.
The reason most handicapped parking is closer to the building is because it safer for all not because it makes it easier for the handicapped person. Sometimes handicapped parking is near the side of a building but further from the front door .
This is so the handicapped person can have readily available access to a sidewalk and is away from the traffic and out of danger of oncoming traffic.

There are many side handicapped entrences in Las Vegas . Most guests can go up a few steps and walk in ( or be conveyed into ) the front door.

Those in wheelchairs need to find the ramps and handicapped enterences.

And have you noticed that the handicapped stalls are usually way to back of the rest rooms?

Some casinos , auditoriums, and amusement parks etc. have wised up and have private easy acess companion restrooms for the
Handicapped. They are a true blessing for the handicapped.

No, accommodations have been already made for most in transportation and access and facilities.

It's not unheard of to receive free or enormously discounted fares, folks.

It might not be unheard of, but why should they receive a discount?

It is nice when offered especially since many times not all buses or public transportation in an area is equipped to handle the handicapped or has limited space for those who are handicapped.

Edited to add :
If one has to wait for several buses before the handicapped one comes that really is not equal cases is it ?

Did I say it pissed me off?

Virtually every group/class could claim an exemption. So why bother charging at all?

Well, it's obviously bothering you.

I completely agree that handicapped people should have access, just not that it should be free.

I drive 45 minutes to and from work every day. I do not get reimbursed for my mileage. It is an inconvenience on my "off time" as we'll as financially but I knew that when I took the job.

I don't think they should have to pay more than an average person and am all for accommodations being made in situations where they are at an unfair disadvantage (like transportation.

Because I asked why?

No, that doesn't show that it's 'obviously bothering me'. It means I asked why they should get a discount/free ride.

You already answered part of your own question. Yes, it is obviously bothering you. First you said "no"-counter to common practice. Furthermore, you then deflate that need by insinuating "well hell, anything goes now!" and that all services, everywhere may as well be free.

How else exactly am I supposed to interpret your posts?

I didn't say all services everywhere should be free, we were discussing transportion.

No, I don't feel they should get an additional discount or ride for free, which is a lot different that saying it bothers me that they do. It's just not that big on the scale of things to worry about.

On public transportation, at the taxpayers expense, most have been refitted to accept handicapped riders. The same as been required of public facilities. I have no issue with that at all. It provides equal access.

What you or any one else has yet to answer is why they should get an additional discount or ride free?

Rather than attempting to make it sound like I have a problem with it, how about answering that simple question?

Your words were why bother charging at all. That was another clue.

Read up on your explanation for the elderly for part of your answer.

Lastly, what I am glad about is we don't consult with average citizens about these things.

So, you're saying that the assumption that most handicapped individuals are on a fixed income is what serves as the basis for giving them a discount/free ride? Do you have statistics on that?

Since the taxpayer is footing the bill for the basic access, if we made it free for everyone to ride, THAT would truly be equal access.

Actually, I am quite a supporter of handicapped individuals rights (both physical and mental) and have worked with them extensively in the past. That doesn't mean they should necessarily be given a free/discounted walk through life.

Why are there senior citizens discounts?
Because they've contributed to the tax base for many decades and are now most likely on fixed incomes. Handicapped seniors receive the senior discount along with the rest of us.

I'm on my phone. Do you have any statistics on the elderly and their financial difficulties? You know there are a number of those with disabilities on fixed income. Why do you want me to dig up something you don't care about anyway?

Ah, so until transport becomes free, the elderly can get the benefits, but the disabled cannot? Cute.

Yeah, and I knew plenty of service providers that held ableist views, while serving their clients like that.

Why wouldn't it just be income based?

Heya OD.
Well if they are seniors. Then it would be and they would get a Seniors discount just like anyone else that is a senior.

Couldn't just do that with those that became handicapped due to another and then got Millions in settlement.....and others might not have any income.

Most of the physically handicapped people I know would prefer to not be treated differently. Maybe we should ask them.

Sometimes, it's rather entertaining to watch someone get their panties in a twist over nothing.

Just curious, considering some of the other responses, what did you find so offensive about mine that you had an urge to try and paint me as a villain?

Not that you would have any reason to know, or even care, but a great portion of my work was as a volunteer. So ableist views were never a factor.

Hello Sir :2wave:

I guess what I am really saying is I don't think so. Unless their handicap interferes with there ability to earn a living wage.
