We all know the FCC lists 7 words you can't say on TV/Radio.

Should the N-word be added to that list?

I was unaware it was used on Regular TV anyway. I can't remeber the last I heard it. Actually I can it was2 days ago said by Eddie Murphy on Inside the Actors Studio. That was the first last and only time I can remeber the word being said.

Should any words be banned? No

Should the FCC be closed down for its unconstitutionality? Damn straight

Just so I understand you:
The N-word isnt so offensive that it should be banned.
Right?

Course not..

Are we going to ban all the words people find offensive?.

Spick, chink, towlehead, zipperhead etc etc.... all are offensive, but to ban a word is ludicrous.

You almost understood me, its that I don't care how offensive a word is. Free speech isn't about protecting popular speech, no one is out to get Mickey Mouse.

You don't have a right not to be offended, and if you think you do, then my purpose in offending you will be fulfilled.

I find the N word offensive. But I don't think it should be banned nor do I think that the FCC should be regulating language on TV. I think that if the FCC took away its decency rules NBC, ABC, CBS and the like would implement their own, and it would allow for more creativity and open development in the cable ranks.

Pornography is a different story however.

How so? Censorship is censorship id'nit?

Well... no. It's already illegal for those under 18 (21 in some states) to view pornography even online, so why should it be legal to provide it over the air to anyone with a TV?

I see your point and I thought about this myself, but I do not believe that stations should be allowed to broadcast pornography over the air. However, on cable or satellite, even basic cable, I think there should be no restrictions.

No. As offensive as certain words are it is even more offensive for the government to come in and tell me that I am allowed or not allowed to say certain things. Censorship should be an individual choice with speech, with film, with books....etc. It should be the responsibility of the individual and/or family/parent to regulate their own speech and viewing. We still live in America (at least at this point) and freedom means little if anything when the government regulates it in matter such as this.

Exactly, unless you're paying me for what comes out of my mouth, nobody can excise words from my vocabulary.

Hell no!

But if for some stupid *** over sensitive reason they do decide to ban the word, I think we should all start a petition to ban the word cracker (when used in racial context), wetback, etc.

I don't think it would be fair to ban one word because it is offensive to a certain race, and not ban the other racial slurs as well, do you?

i agree w/ you caine, that other racial names should be banned.

now don't get me wrong, i'm all for free speech, except when it goes overboard. the 'n' word shouldn't be allowed because it is the worst word you can call a black person. that's why i'm confused why blacks today use to word to refer to eachother. but when a white person joins in and says it, the black people get upset and angry.

racial names that are very offensive should probably be banned, but we should not go farther than that by banning every word. just the racial names.

Actually the words "******" or "Negroe" have only become insults in the past 100 years. The word originates from the dutch "neger" which was a term used when speaking of people from Africa. It's wrong to say that the "N" word refers only to black people as it's widely use for people from Arabic countries and Hindus. The perception people have that the "N" word was ever been an insult is related to the fact that most Africans were thought of as inferior by Whites during the slavery times and most people today have come to associate the words "******" with "Slave".

As for banning the word....I dont know seems kinda...wierd? How do you ban a word?

your comment is foolhardy and unrealistic, for the very reasons you give for banning it
words are nothing
it is merely the modern day connotation that those words convey
all of which changes over time

so if we ban N!gger, do we ban the word fag?
fag to you may mean a gay person in a derogatory way
but to others all it means is a cigarette
and so long as 'n!ggers' call each other 'n!ggers' than this is a worthless debate

the ban would be used as a reason to exclude Blacks. the N-word is used culturally by blacks in Rap, by standup comedy, every day. If white can't say it then blacks can't say it. Freedom of speech is freedom of speech, we don't need to try to offend. We need to be considerate, even Blacks.

Banned as in censored in certain arenas? Sure. Why not? It's banned here isn't it. But banned as in it can no longer be said anywhere by anyone. No.

I am all for giving people the right to demonstrate their inferiority to civilized people, especially in public.

How does saying a word make you inferior? I believe people who support censorship for racial issues are just as racist as the people who use the words, if not worse. By banning any word that involves race we are simply separating people into groups and contradicting the reason for banning the words in the first place.

Also, by banning words like the f-word and such we're putting a sort of supernatural quality on them. If they were normal words, swearing wouldn't be a problem. Saying f*** you has the same meaning as screw you, and saying s**t is the same as saying snap something, so why make the meanings different?

How does saying a word make you inferior?

Saying the word does not make you inferior. Believing in the intent behind the word does-- and prohibiting the word only hides the inferiority. I agree with you about censorship, but I also believe that the usage of certain words in public-- along with belief in certain repulsive ideologies-- does mark a person as lacking in civility, rationality, self-control, and the other qualities of superior human beings.

I also believe that these words can be used appropriately, and that allowing people sufficiently civilized to do so is almost as important as allowing their lessers to demonstrate why they should not be taken seriously.
