Should porn be illegal

People are so scared about the liberals taking away their guns, but i think the more important issue is the hard religious right trying to take our Porn!!!!

They'll have to pry the porn from my warm, sticky hands!!!

consentual porn to me is not a big deal if that's what people want to do with their lives who cares. Gay, straight, odd harmless fetishes who cares.

So whats your opinion?

made some changes

Porn is nothing more than legal prostitution. Neither should be illegal.

There's nothing wrong with the sexual objectification of women because, in fact, attractive women and men are, by definition, sex objects.

The criticism from right wing "feminists" on porn stems fundamentally from their failure to realize that being a sex object and being other things (a Mom, a scientist, a community organizer) are not mutually exclusive. Women and men can be both sex objects and smart objects. And being proud of one's physical endowments doesn't automatically entail a lack of concern or pride in other parts of their life in which they can (and do) succeed.

Furthermore, if one believes in men/women being in control of their own bodies, then to object to pornography makes one a hypocrite. In a society that values equality, both men and women should have the right to display themselves in public if they choose, and not to display themselves if they choose. But such freedom can exist without the possibility of exploitation only when inefficiencies in the global capitalist system that exacerbate poverty are removed.
The problem is you are only talking about the objectification from the point of view of those in the porn. The point of view of those viewing it is far more important, being a much larger group. They do not a mother and full, female human.

So, the pov of the majority is the only thing that counts? Everything else be damned?

Anyone who is attractive is automatically a sex object, unless he/she wants to walk around everywhere in burkas or robes.

The fundamental problem stems from the notion that being a sex object is bad.

Good point. The problem isn't being a sex object, but being ONLY one, or being one when it's not appropriate.

On that note, I wish I were more of a sex object.

Well some of this is about terminology. Certainly even legitimate sexuality involves lower aspects of attraction or the basic arousal, but it builds on them, it doesn't just view the other person as that 'sex object', but hopefully as a full person.

I'm gonna pretend that wasn't real.

Thank god porn is legal, what the hell would I ever do with my time?

On a serious note though, illegalizing porn would put so many people out of work and kill an entire industry which is the last thing we need in this abysmal economy. Also, it's freedom of choice, you can't make something like that illegal. It's their choice.

The government should never be in the business of regulating content period. There are certain times when content would come in violation of other types of laws such as abuse/assault laws against children for child porn. But the child porn would then have to involve actual children. Drawn images that are clearly not real children (e.g Bart Simpson getting it on with Kim Possible) cause no abuse to any individual. Libel/slander would also come under assault, but that's for another thread.

Now I am not saying that the porn industry doesn't do a lot of illegal activities, but none of those activities are related to the content of their films, or rather not directly. The activities that RM has put forth should be dealt with in a legal manner, but since those activities are not required to make pornographic content, pornographic content itself should never be regulated, or made illegal.

BTW I do not hold regulating excluding minors from seeing porn the same as general content regulation, but it's a fine line and one where the bulk of the responsibility should be placed on the parent.
