Depends on the source and topic. Example: If FOX says that Barack Obama is a Muslim based on his school, don't trus it. If Newsweek says books are being flushed down the toilet in Iraq, think twice.

I say sometimes. The media only tells us what they want to tell us.A liberal news source is going to post anti-American stories, bash our troops stories and anything else that undermines the war effort. So while they will gladly tell us how many troops died in Iraq as a testament to what the terrorist and insurgents have accomplished, but will hesitate to say anything regarding the accomplishments and heroics of our troops.

I believe that if it's cable you can trust the unknown reporter who comes on at the top of the hour or on the half hour for 5 minutes and gives you the most important news without commentary. In cable news I only like Headline News and even that is starting to get into the commentary business. I don't need commentary I need actual news. On the MSM again the five minutes at the top of your local news is usually accurate.

I usually loom at a lot of different international newspapers. Some place like this:

22,800 Newspapers and Magazines - AllYouCanRead.com

One thing I like about certain countries is that their newspapers say who they are. If they support the socialist, they say so. if they support the right wing they tell you. The message becomes more important than the circulation numbers.

It only tells you what they want you to hear, thats my look at it.

News sources should rarely be trusted because they don't exist to inform the public anymore, they exist to get ratings. It's been decades since news has been there simply to tell people what's going on. Now it's politically biased, ratings biased and out to make a buck.

Not independently.

I agree.

You will here the specific agendas from each source. Left-wing news will tell you how bad the right is doing and Right-wing news will tell you how bad the left is doing.

Take the story from each side and find the similarities and you will get a the rough draft of the true version of a story.

It will really be great if our news was free from all political and capitalist interference.

Mainstream News is now entertainment. As such, the quality sucks.

Good answer here. If you can verify it from more than 2 other sources chances are it's good.

Great responses, people. The combination of all of the above speaks volumes for the trust that most of us have in mainstream news sources.

***This is why everyone should tune in to Rush Limbaugh for 3 hours a day to get the real news, and to get it with an unbiased viewpoint.

LOL! He's about as biased as you can get!

I don't think we should be grappling with whether or not the mainstream news should be trusted so much as how to develop a healthy sense of skepticism and apply such equally to all sources of information. If all one's distaste for mainstream news is doing is to send them to latch on to the first thing that doesn't jibe with the mainstream news, they are acting every bit the part of the uncritical consumer they so despise.

As one who posted for quite a long time at various left of center groups,I can say that those who complain most bitterly about "sheeple" are often times the very least critical thinkers, themselves. All they have done is replace mindless acceptance of one source with mindless acceptance of another that counters the first. In this case, "Counterpunch" was their gospel rather than "Fox".

not if you mean watching just one news source
Rathergate seems to exemplify that quite well
multiple sources with differing viewpoints would be best since there is no unbiased news source

Please excuse me while poke my eyes out with a fork.

You forgot to finish the sentence with, 'but I'm only kidding, considering this is a completely inaccurate statement'. Seems like I'm forever correcting you, kid.

He should really finish most of his sentences that way shouldn't he?

I just call Fred Phelps directly and get all the unbias news there is in a 10 minute phone call.

***I would be remiss not to mention that besides presenting the factual portion to our news like no other--that Rush also offers views that are on the cutting edge of societal evolution. The fact that he presents more hard hitting eye opening realisms in the first five minutes of his daily monologue, should in every way be seen as a slap in the face to the few liberal listeners that think they stand a chance of challenging Rush's superior political intellect. Debating politics on Rush's show is a lesson if futility, as liberals soon see just how politically vacuous they have become.
