Would it be reasonable to forfeit the right of business owners to display religious symbols once a business opens it's doors to the public?

Poll on the way.

No and that has nothing to do with not being allowed to deny service to lgbt exclusively, which is i suspect where this idea came from

No, especially if the store sells religious symbols.

I am sorry. I misread the question and answered "yes", where I believe strongly in "no". :3oops:

I'm seeing "no" but I'm not seeing an argument as to why. Isn't the argument that business owners forfeit certain rights once they open a business and there is no right to operate their business according to their own moral code?

Displaying something religious isn't denying service to anybody.

It's because "Corporations are People" with first amendment rights. As such, they have the right to publicly display their speech so long as that speech does not rise to the level where it might violate a particular state or federal law.

It's their business, it's their choice.

My long answer is, the 1st Amendment Establishment Clause restricts the Congress and the 14th Amendment incorporated the 1st Amendment to the states, not anyone else. A business can do whatever they wish regarding religious symbol displays, including the selling of those same symbols.

My short answer is, no.

I despise the phrase "open to the public". As for the question, of course they have the right to display such things.

Displaying something religious isn't denying service to anybody.

But it could be offensive to someone such that they don't want to go there any more, isn't that just the same as denying service?

A private business? Private being the operative word here. They should be able to display any religious symbols they like...as long as they don't take a dime from the govt...it's not the govt's. business.

No, that's not the argument.

I could claim, using the same logic you are, that conservatives are effectively pro-discrimination because they constantly argue against public accommodation laws.

The customer is making the decision there, as opposed to the business owner.

You are conflating two separate issues. As a business open to the public, it and its owners are not allowed to deny service or discriminate against their customers based on the customers' perceived or actual race, gender, age, creed, sexuality, etc.

The display of religious symbols -- however annoying it may be -- is not one in the same as an discriminate attempt to deny service.

they forfeit the right to deny service to minorities, for very good reasons. I do not see a compelling governmental interest to do what you're proposing and the courts would not allow it anyway because free speech

If they're offended because of some religious symbols displayed in a store, so much that they don't want to go there anymore, then that's their problem.
