Some parents are worried that the 60% alcohol in hand sanitizer will lead to school children trying to get drunk from drinking it. Others are worried about the flammable nature of alcohol. Some school districts have already banned it. What do you think? See article below for more information.

I thought that they were going to go with the whole, "It breeds more anti-biotic resistant strains," but then I saw this depressing line of reasoning. I assure anyone here, that teenagers have far les retarded methods of getting wasted.

I don't get the whole "hand sanitizer" bit. Maybe thinking has changed, but when I worked in a hospital the infections control nurses told us that alcohol was really a pretty poor germ killer.

I agree that flammability should be a concern.

I never have been drunk, and had no desire ever to be so as a kid, so I guess I don't get that problem either.

I don't believe that Hand sanitizer should be banned in public. If I were are going bann anything, make it the Swine Flu.

Of course us good republican right wingers are strongly hoping that those dam democrats who want heath and medical care well get the flu and pass away.

Is it really all that surprising? I, too, have never been drunk, nor have I ever had the desire to be.

I think kids should be prevented from drinking hand sanitizer or setting it on fire.

It's called child control.

I think it is an extreme rarity to not have been drunk once in ones lifetime.

To be fair, I said, Perhaps from some areas of the school If parents are so concerned, it can be something that is teacher monitored. Both sides win, clean hands and no drunken school fires.

Most of the germs and bacteria that this stuff is designed to protect against are far more dangerous than whatever bored kids could do with hand wash. Plus, if your child is so bored that they're about to swallow hand cleaner for a fix, you've got bigger problems than worring about your local school's choice in hygeine products.

I worry about all this overuse of anti-bacterial soaps and sanitizers causing more super germs. I think my kids are too smart to drink sanitizer. That's just crazy.

Apparently that's more of a problem with oral antibiotics than then handwash, according to our nursing lecturers. There's so many antibiotic resistant strains of various diseases spreading around these days because some folks think antibiotics are the answer to every infection. I had a penicillin resistant chest infection a few years back, and that was not pretty.

Really? I knew getting it too often could reduce it's effectiveness, but I didn't know it could be so dangerous.

There's nothing unusual about it. Heck, I haven't had any alcohol in more than 20 years. I just don't care for it and find nothing enjoyable about puking my guts out.

Don't know... we're into the "Jackass" generation nowadays. I'm sure some kid will look at the container and wonder "what if?"

And the Darwinian in me is thinking - "go ahead.."

They've also done stupid things before as well. Contrary to what you may think, this generation isn't much differant than yours. You're probably just getting older. Even the parents were ignorant of many dangers back in the day. Opium, laudnum, and many other dangerous drugs were used for typical childhood ailements.

Oh, that's probably correct.

To be fair - that is the parents or doctors. Not quite the same as teens getting opium without knowing what it's for.

I've never researched hand sanitizer so I don't even know if it works that well. Alcohol kills germs but I don't know the length of exposure required for it to kill bacteria. I don't use hand sanitizer because my hands don't feel clean afterwards. If you use a regular soap it will bind to the germs (including viruses, which hand sanitizers don't kill) and wash them away. How lazy are we as a society that we can't find a sink with some soap?

And then you have industry sponsored research being posted in the news, like in a recent article in Canada where it claimed 'experts say' that washing your hands is not as good of a preventative measure against the flu as we thought... vaccines provide better protection.

I am so tired of the greed and political pissing contests. Just wash your damn hands with soap and that's good enough.

Well, I'm a nursing student, and the advice we've been given is to use the alcohol wash when going between patients and different environments, but if there's noticable contamination of the hands (dirt, bodily fluids etc.) to use only soap and water. I'm not sure why, but that's the UK healthcare perspective.

I kinda like sneaking up on the germs from the inside; a glass of vino, with a good meal seems to do the job. ;)

You mean like huffing paint?
That's teenagers for you. Surely at some point, they've got to learn that ingesting random things isn't a great idea. Isn't that taught about the same time as potty training? Do we even potty train anymore? Questions like the OP make me think teenagers are taking their parents to college to wipe their bums for them.

They're not babies. If we remove everything they could possibly use improperly, they'll be left with...basically nothing.
