So, with the government shutdown issue looming, debt ceiling battle a week or two after that, the implementation of Obamacare, etc, wondering what stock strategies anyone is using for the near-term. ("stay the course" strategies aside)

I would look at companies that are going to fair well over Christmas depending on what you mean by "short-term" but I am not a stock expert. There are a few companies that I am tempted into buying because I see them positioning themselves better at the retail level, but I have not really investigated them much yet to be certain. I would wait until the market panics a little before I bought, but that is more a meta strategy to hopefully catch a low.

Again, not advice, just something I have thought about--Coinstar. Christmas is coming up; a government shutdown possible looms; Obamacare going to go into effect; new jobs numbers sliding. All of those would seem to indicate a lot of people are going to be cashing in some coins. I would actually like to see some numbers on how Redbox is doing though before I would invest in them. I cashed out of the market before the recession, but have been considering strategies for if I get back in. This has been a very good year for us, so it is something I am more than casually considering. I just haven't decide who is the best site to go through for my account at this point. I usually invest more long term though than 1-6 months. I focus more on 3-5 year performance.

The best advice I can give someone who is thinking of making short term investments in the stock market is:

DON'T DO IT!!!

Probably the best advice here.

Stock day-traders are like slot machines - you hear about the few that win, and never hear about the many that lose.

There are many companies with large cash holdings and others whose fundementals are strong regardless of the political climate in Washington. With QE continuing well into the future, unless the next Fed head veers off course, stocks will continue to be worth having. If the market takes a serious correction in the next month, hold and scoop up additional stocks of the companies mentioned in my opening as they will hold value and grow coming out of any short term panic.

I know, I know. "Don't time the market" It's too tempting though. I'm anticipating market contraction over the next few weeks due to the gov't (both sides) screwing with policy. Think Bernanke might even extend his current buying into 1Q-2Q 2014 before tightening slightly. Big picture, market will react negatively for the next few weeks until the craziness of the debt ceiling is over, then will stabilize and rise.

They're pretty comparable now. There's sites out there that compare the different online broker services. Online Stock Trading Review 2013 | Best Online Trading Services | Stock Trading Online - TopTenREVIEWS

Depends on what you're looking for.

I don't think Obama will let the market tank before the midterm elections. After that the Dems are going to have to focus on 2016 so things may hold for while. Obama doesn't have much else going for him, even though he's buying his way out of this.
