Two Salt Lake County sheriff’s deputies were wounded — one shot in the eye and the other in the cheek — and the suspect was killed during a shootout Saturday morning outside the county jail.

Officials said both deputies were taken to a hospital and were expected to survive. Their identities were not immediately available.

Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera said in a news conference that the two injured officers were partners and worked as part of campus security.

Here's your 'Shooting of the Day.'

This, and the roughly 100 deaths by gunshot which also occurred on the same day, again demonstrate clearly one truth. It is this:

Our current gun laws and their level of enforcement were insufficient to prevent the deaths.

The same statement can be made each day of the year as roughly another 100 Americans die from gunshot.

Regards, stay safe 'n well ... 'n un-shot.

And 106 people die every day in car accidents. Are their deaths less relevant to our society? Lord knows, any person can make a different lifestyle choice. Use public transportation, move to the city, etc. It's a choice. If the nation as a whole cared, we could have a national speed limit no higher than 35 mph. Why not? It's inconvenient, sure but just get up earlier, plan more, leave more time before travelling, etc.

How is that 'inconvenience' not worth an extra ~20,000 lives/yr, at least? (~80/day) Dead is dead, right? How does the manner matter? I'm sure it doesnt to the dead persons.

And when (if) you subtract the gun suicides from your #, then it's only 33.3 people per day killed by guns. (Still unfortunate of course)

I believe in not including the number of suicides because:

a) for the most part, they are not a danger to the public. (personal choice or illness, but not something that all the rest of us should have to be held responsible for)

b) there's no gun law that can be passed that would stop gun suicide because at its most basic, the 2a allows non-prohibited adults to own a single firearm. Even if just a revolver, hunting rifle, single shot musket pistol. It would require the repeal of the 2A, banning all firearms, and confiscating all firearms.

So...what would you suggest, besides your usual platitude? I understand not liking the current situation, but basic condescension with no practical solutions is just self-indulgent IMO.
