Jackson: I Never Called Bush or Rumsfeld ‘War Criminals’
After a lunch break, Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D., Ill.) makes some brief remarks questioning whether Judge Jackson ever called President George W. Bush and former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld “war criminals,” as Sen. John Cornyn (R., Texas) said during his questioning in the morning session.
“Why in the world would you call Secretary of Defense [Donald] Rumsfeld and George W. Bush war criminals in a legal filing? It seems so out of character for you,” Mr. Cornyn said. Judge Jackson responded that she didn’t remember that reference.
Mr. Durbin said, based on his research over the break, he believed the reference was to her service as a public defender in which she filed several habeas petitions against the U.S. naming Messrs. Bush and Rumsfeld in their official capacities. In those petitions, one individual alleged the government had sanctioned torture against the individual, which would constitute a war crime, he said.
“So to be clear,” he concludes, “there is no time that you called President Bush or Secretary Rumsfeld a war criminal?”
“No, thank you, that was correct,” Judge Jackson responds.
"Seem to be" is your interpretation, Judge Jackson need not even be in the same room with the G.O.P. questioners for their questioning to be
"stupid and out of line".
