There are some fantasies that should remain fantasies. Some that I know for a fact would NOT be a turn on for me IRL due to inhibitions, nervousness, physical discomfort, etc. But in the fantasy, or in the porn, those things aren't issues.

OK. I was just curious whether you'd tried them for real and found them lacking or just didn't want to try them for real to begin with.

I do think porn can have an interesting symbiosis with sexual repression. I recall how areas with arguably the strongest taboos regarding sex are often the most lucrative for porn companies, especially those that sell through the internet. Porn consumers might have the potential to enjoy activities shown, but may be too inhibited to try them out. These inhibitions are not necessarily eternal or set in stone, but may be the result of e.g. social taboos. The list of "fantasies that should remain fantasies" would have probably been different (and longer) were you a 1950s housewife. Perhaps the list would be shorter if this were 2050 and you'd been born in a community with fewer and weaker taboos.

This is not, of course, to say that repression is the only factor driving porn - that would be silly. It's not difficult to picture uses for it even in the most sexually open society conceivable. The demand also doesn't come only from the viewer/consumer - e.g., exhibitionism is a very real phenomenon.

For many people the stuff that's off limits in "real life" would include simple same-sex activities, or even anal sex with anyone, swinging, one night stands, etc. What is beyond the pale 'IRL' is actually very subjective.

BTW, I was just hanging with a grandma with a big collection of bestiality and even scat porn - not kidding. (No doubt some would prefer to see us "hanging" in another way.) It's amazing who one can find when you actively seek out other "perverts" (in the eyes of polite society). I'm glad you mention that about old ladies because if I'd believed that stereotype I never would have met the grandma in question.

Regarding Catholics, the Holy Inquisition provides a great deal of inspiration with regard to BDSM equipment, technique, etc. The sadistic tortures and torture equipment they've employed may well have provided even the Marquis de Sade with inspiration (despite his anti-religious stance).
