More than 450 credibly accused child sex abusers have ministered in the Catholic Church in Illinois over almost seven decades, the office of the state’s attorney general, Kwame Raoul, said Tuesday in an investigative report. That is more than four times the number that the church had publicly disclosed before 2018, when the state began its investigation.

The 696-page report found that clergy members and lay religious brothers had abused at least 1,997 children since 1950 in the state’s six dioceses, including the prominent Archdiocese of Chicago.
Most of the abuse documented in the report happened decades ago. The report acknowledges that criminal prosecutions and civil lawsuits will be impossible for many victims, because of statutes of limitations and the fact that the majority of the perpetrators have died.
The report was intended to provide “public accountability and a measure of healing to survivors who have long suffered in silence,” Mr. Raoul said at a news conference Tuesday morning. He said the dioceses had fulfilled their pledges to cooperate fully with the investigation.

Incredibly sad. But it is good to see such a dedicated investigation. Without the hard work of these investigators the church would have happily swept these (and has been for decades) cases under the rug.

Where is the cry from the transphobes to protect the children from these priests? Deafening silence.

And the religious right will continue sweeping these cases under the rug because it doesn't fit their narrative that gay/trans folk are the actual 'groomers.'

I can never forgive the catholic church for what they have done. But this has nothing to do with trans or gay people

Oh look at that, it's not the LGBTQ community. Instead it's a religious institution that many of these far right chuds are apart of. Like Desantis and his Desimps, being Catholics. But lets ban them from existing because a religious institution that abuses kids and covers it up non stop told a few true beliver loons that the issue is the LGBTQ community.

Historically it seems the biggest perpetrators of child abuse and sexual abuse seem to be the church.

Pretty sure plenty of people have said anyone who abuses kids should be punished. In fact I haven't seen a republican say otherwise. Have you?

You didn't read what I said. Where is the outcry from the transphobes to keep children away from priests?

It appears to be standard operations for Americans to fear something that won't hurt them (transgender people) while extolling the thing that can hurt them (organized religion staff).

Hey look over there, drag queens and Bud Light..

That's an incredibly silly thing to say. No one is justifying this behavior.

At the same time, these are old cases. The Catholic church - like other large organizations - has been working very hard to provide training and systems to keep this from happening.

Not silly at all. Gay/trans folk are the #1 target at the moment of conservatives and the GQP. They are demonized as 'groomers' trying to sexualize children. Conservatives have never gone after the Catholic Church the way they go after the LGTBQ community.

Lmao, they ignored it for years! It was only because of decades of public backlash/pressure and dwindling mass attendance did the Church finally take any meaningful actions.

Yes. It's a silly talking point. Really a conspiracy theory. And 'Gay/trans folk' have zero connection to this issue. And to try to paint it as some kind of political issue, or as tied to one party, is just stupid.

They did! A lot of organizations (not just the Catholic Church) struggled to deal with this issue in the 70s and 80s. The Catholic Church took it's lumps and deserved them. But again, they've also worked very hard over the past three decades to correct the problem and prevent it going forward. This is a report detailing the findings of decades of reports from the church records. If it helps the healing process for some, that's great. But it's largely a relic of the past.

What is the conspiracy theory? That the GOP and Far Right are targeting the LGBTQ community as child predators? Have you been living under a rock?

Of course it's a political issue. Widespread child abuse is one of the most important political issues.

Your whitewashing of history is quite pathetic. But I cannot say I am surprised. Conservatives always go to the defense of the institutions that preserve hierarchy/power. The only conservatives I've met willing to properly condemn the Catholic Church's actions/inactions were Protestant or agnostic.

Yes. That's a conspiracy theory, and a talking point. And has ZERO to do with this topic.

Trying to do a little gymnastics there? Child abuse is a big issue - an important one. Trying to tie this to one party is stupid.

lol. And more CT that displays a lack of understanding of history. No one is defending the Catholic Churches actions on this issue. It was also decades ago, and not unique at all to this denomination, or even religious organizations.

<SARC>Big Deal! That's less than 6.5 per year. There are 37,602 Catholic Priests in the US so that proves that only 0.017% of them are sexual abusers. Right?</SARC>

Well, at least to prevent people from finding out that [1] it happened, [2] it is still happening, and [3] it is going to continue to happen so that the financial assets of the RCC Inc. can be preserved at the same time as it does everything in its power to "guilt" the survivors into not "threatening the existence of Mother Church".

Pretty sure plenty of people have said anyone who abuses kids should be punished. In fact I haven't seen a republican say otherwise. Have you?

How many conservatives are pushing bills banning parents from taking their kids to church the way they are pushing bills banning parents from taking their kids to drag story time?

I'm certain MTG, DeSantis, Cruz, and the rest of the MAGA Morality Mob will be tweeting up a storm condemning these perverts and demanding exhaustive Congressional investigations into why organized religion makes it easy for pedophiles to prey on children.

In the meantime, warn the kids to steer clear of priests, pastors, and youth ministers.

They are waiting for Bud Light to honor a priest with his image on a can, then they'll go apeshit.

And again, that's a false statement. Virtually all of these incidents happened decades ago. Sure, there will be an occasional incident just as you will find in any large organization which involves children. But they are few and far between, and dealt with swiftly. Again - any large organization.
