Senate votes to block funds for Guantanamo closure

Regardless of Gitmo's status, the reality is that there are now a lot of inmates and they're still a big security issue. Until the innocent can be sorted from the guilty, they all have to be treated as a risk. I don't blame the senate for tearing this bill apart.

On the other side. I think this will hurt his effort with the europeans whom he asked to take some of the detainees. If we are rightfully not willing to take them, how can he expect europe to do the same?

Well, that's a complicated issue. Al Qaeda was formerly targetting the U.S. and its overseas operations, mostly... but once the invasions happened and Europe got on board, they had their own security concerns. I still think the principle risk from Al Qaeda is towards the United States which is why the current Admin could justify not wanting to take them. Europe's issues centre mostly around the cultural divides between Euro culture and Islam, and tensions already present there. In other words Europe has its own reason for wanting the inmates.

In any case... Europe will definitely want its own show trials, its own hyped up investigations into terrorism, and having some Gitmo people to serve up, especially ones who are citizens of their country, would be prime real estate for political maneuvering.

Don't worry TD. While sitting on the sidelines for the next 16 years you will have the oportunity to sort out what is truth and what it is like for people that are truely concerned for this country to be in charge. Watch and learn truth.

First...over the next several weeks you will have to learn to admit that Cheney is a desperate liar and supporting his lies has led you to falsely believe that what you are saying is truth as opposed to the BS which it actually is.

When and how long do you think it will take the Republican party to regain dignity and respect in the eyes of the world?

As we all know they have Zero now.

Try to concentrate. It wasn't the food, it wasn't the excellent medical care. The prison at Gitmo was created to take advantage of a legal loophole, an excuse to hold people indefinitely, without charging them. If you want to live in Russia or China or some country that doesn't give a damn about individual rights, take a hike. Here in America, even prisoners have the right to know what they are charged with, and the right to representation. That's how we do it in this country....if you don't like it, find another.

Stop crying. You falsey lied about me starting a thread to simply "bash obama", You then infered I was a "partisan hack" for daring to critisize obama.

You got your attitude right back in your face. So you can take your apology and go pound sand....

Damn, the hubris of these so called "moderates" ......

(Your call now. Come back to me with crap, you will get it right back. Come back with an intelligent on topic post and I will treat you the same. Your call chuckles)

:2wave:

I agree with you and the senate here. I think Obama wanted to close GITMO to keep his campaign promise, but failed to see the bigger picture that the Democrats, wouldn't risk thier seats, nor (for the most part) thier countrymen with this ill sighted attempt.

They don't want them. Did you mean to say they want them? I am confused here.

But yes, Europe has its issues regarding al qaeda, but I think its relying on the US too much, while blaming us for our actions to protect ourselves and them. Though less so with Obama in office.

How so. Aren't most of the GITMO inmates either hard core terrorists, or suspected terrorists thier own countries do not want back?

No, most of them are "enemy combatants" who were picked up on the battlefield. Of course, after rotting at Gitmo for 7 years they may all have turned into hardcore terrorists. I would.

I wonder if Durbin voted for the bill, since he thinks we employ Nazi guards at Gitmo.

Silly argument, no expects them to change their mind about America.

No it was the detainee abuse and torture. Pretty much that was it.

I am always confused

It's okay, we know.

Awesome. thanks for admitting this.

What do countries normally do to the enemy caught on the battlefield and for how long?

Define "battle field" in the context of the war on terror.

Am I missing something? I thought some EU nations wanted them back, like Germany? Tell me if I'm wrong. I can never seem to keep that specific detail straight.

Everyone is too reliant on the U.S., but the U.S. wanted it that way. So it's a two-sided coin, really.

It's been a long day and I'm tired... I'll answer this one later. Sorry Rev.

I have no need to press my point further, it's been made effectively. Thanks for the offer!

Although I'm sure the Republicans will attempt to block every single step of the process every step of the way.
Then you can breath a sigh of relief! The Republicans have power to stop nothing. Enjoy the farce and remember it is brought to you entirely by the Democrats.

This is better than the Comedy Channel.

What an amusing prediction; you may wish to polish that crystal ball you are using. Harry Reid is going to be the first of many casualties of the Democrats; polls in Nevada have him losing by significant margins.

First...over the next several weeks you will have to learn to admit that Cheney is a desperate liar and supporting his lies has led you to falsely believe that what you are saying is truth as opposed to the BS which it actually is.

I find this rhetoric farcical considering the FACT that the Democrats YOU support won't release the memos indicating that what Cheney is saying is indeed the truth.

Do you think your denial is an adequate defense for avoiding reality and the truth?

When and how long do you think it will take the Republican party to regain dignity and respect in the eyes of the world?

The notion that Democrats have any dignity and respect requires a willful denial I certainly am incapable of. Have you seen any recent polls on how they are doing and perceived?

The only people making such asinine assertions are Democrats who are desperate to find cover for the failure that is certainly coming to their desperate grab for political power.

As we all know they have Zero now.

Once more, have you looked at recent polls on the Democrat led Congress?

I am starting to think Republicans may actually take it back in the midterm elections if they put up credible candidates; Harry Reid will be the first casualty of Democrats irresponsible leadership.

No it was the detainee abuse and torture. Pretty much that was it.

The only ones making such asinine claims are those who bring no facts to the debate; the "enhanced" methods were conducted on THREE detainees because other methods were getting no results and these "enhanced" methods do not meet the definition of torture even as used by the United Nations.

What part of the TRUTH do you not get? I am always amused when Liberals substitute hyperbole and disingenuous partisan politics for facts and honest discourse.

The asinine argument that we mistreat our prisoners is not only an outright lie; but patently offensive.

its just the "tip of the ice berg". And if it isn't then 3 is 3 too many!

You version of the "truth" is, as usual, false.
CIA records state that at least 30 detainees received enhanced interrogation.
But of course, you knew that.

Please share the credible source of your "secret" information that no one seems to have right now.

Hey Cheney is asking for full disclosure, if you can imagine that, I think that there will soon be a time that his wishes will come through.

Cheney asking for full disclosure...what a joke.

How about full disclosure about him outing covert CIA agents for political gain?

Cheney is going to flap his gums into a corner that he can't back out of.
He is a obvious lying old fool.

I say light will shed truth....that is why Dick lived in the dark for the last eight years.

I always find it ironic when Liberals rail about the truth while expressing lies.

Two words, EPIC FAIL for Obama and good for America. I am shocked personally at the 90-6 vote against closing GITMO, Given the attacks on the last admin during the war by many of these senators on GITMO.

I'd just like to clarify that they didn't vote against closing Gitmo. That's a misrepresentation of what happened. The quotes I've read about this vote were to the effect that they voted against the FUNDING until a more detailed plan is presented to them. I'm sure your misrepresentation was accidental of course.

You are clinically insane.
