So you come across something like this and the first thought is that it has to be fake news, someone is trying it on.

The moment when the United States Senate agreed unanimously to make lynching a federal crime for the first time. History.

“Literally thousands of African-Americans were being lynched throughout history, and the Senate never stepped up to pass any legislation to stop this heinous, despicable behavior,” Booker told the Times earlier this year..

But no, it appears real.

****ing amazing! The americans have only just got around to making lynching illegal.

So what happened? Did it just come to your realisation that lynching someone is usually a bad idea or is trump getting nervous?

Red:
Yep...only just now, and at the moment, it hasn't even been passed the House, let alone signed by Trump. So, lynching may yet not become criminal behavior.

 lynching has always been illegal. This bill is just to add it by name to the code. I’m not sure what the purpose of this is other than to create tension.

Finally. A bill that would have criminalized mobs seeking to lynch George Zimmerman for shooting Trayvon Martin in self defence.

Of all of the lynching cases in America over the past 100 years, you think of the not-even-close-to-lynching example of George Zimmerman, where nobody was lynched?

That (bolded above) ignores state laws against murder - which can have a higher (death) penalty. Does a group (more than one?) of police officers arriving on the scene and executing a 'suspect' qualify as a lynching under this (proposed) federal law?

Lynching has been a federal crime since the 30s. This would make it a hate crime. As Booker and Harris seem to be its main advocates, it probably should be called the New Hampshire Primary & Iowa Caucus Victory Act of 2018.

You misread the article. Murder is illegal so lynching was already illegal. What this does is turn that particular method of murder into a federal "hate crime".

The law book gets bigger all of the time as freedom recedes.

Yep, you may be losing the freedom to lynch soon. Maybe it's time to get a mob together to do something about that.

That the bill passed unanimously is absolutely no surprise. After all, the electoral chances of anyone who voted AGAINST making lynching illegal would be slightly lower than the electoral chances of three day old road kill - except in REALLY solid "Red" or "Blue" areas.

How about the purpose is to bring justice instead of hate to the systems.

I would suggest your comment is disingenuous to state that lynching is illegal when

Between 1882 and 1968, more than 4,000 African-American men, women and children were lynched according to data from the Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit legal advocacy group. But 99% of those responsible for the lynchings escaped prosecution or punishment by state or local officials.

Since when has killing somebody been legal, as you say above?

OK, how would the law being changed today help any of those people?

Lynching is already illegal. It's been illegal for decades, maybe more than a hundred years.

That would depend on whether you committed some other crime in the course of lynching your neighbor.

You people can't be for real!...lol

The keyword is it is now considered a "federal" crime meaning the crime is taken out of the hands of local governments.
Just another unnecessary power grab compliments of Uncle Sam.

The law book gets bigger all of the time as freedom recedes.

Hawkeye is really concerned about his eroding freedom to murder people.

Liberals are relieved that murder is finally illegal.

Here's the thing:

Lynching is one of those crimes that has a historical pattern of local authorities going "well nothing to go on no suspects no siree i guess he must have lynched himself."
