Senate Democrats seek to force release of Jeffrey Epstein files with rarely used "Rule of Five" law​


Washington — Senate Democrats are trying to force the Justice Department to release the Jeffrey Epstein files using a little-known law that directs executive agencies to turn over information to congressional oversight committees, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer announced Wednesday.

"Today Senate Democrats take additional action to try and uncover the truth about the Epstein files," Schumer said on the Senate floor, and he proceeded to describe the nearly century-old law the minority would use to try to compel the release of the "full and complete Epstein files."

The federal law, known as Section 2954 and referred to as the "Rule of Five," allows five members on the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Government Affairs to submit an information request on matters within its jurisdiction to a federal agency. Enacted in 1928, the obscure law is part of Congress' ability to wield influence over executive branch agencies, and gives minority members of the oversight committees the ability to request information without the help of the committee chairman.

Looks like the files are going to come out either way.

Bondi has nothing to worry about. Congress can have all the contempt they can handle, they still don't have the ability to touch Pam Bondi much less coerce her. Congress relinquished its authority to the Executive, and now gets to live with the reality that it's no longer relevant.

Peter Navarro replied that Congress no longer has any enforcement authority effective January 20th, 2025, since from that date onward Donald can simply pardon anybody he wants, and anybody who might be in a position to "arrest" Pam Bondi reports to Donald Trump so he can simply fire anybody who would attempt to put handcuffs on her.

When he does, all those government employees who have an orange dick print on their face will be held accountable.

When Trump is gone, I agree there may be accountability. But for the next 3.5 years, Pam Bondi has absolutely zip to worry about, and Donald can pardon her before he leaves office if she buys enough DJT or $TRUMP.

Trump can't do shit to anyone once he's out of office.
Trump will not pardon her unless there is something in it for him, and if he does, he has to do it before he leaves office. Further, pardoning her strips her of 5th amendment protections. Trump does not want that.
 
Agreed. Which makes me wonder why the republicans do not simply remove his ass from office and move on.

Yeah, but when would that ever happen?

He intends to leave office only in death.
 
But will she be able to modify the files or literally hide some of them? You know Trump will instruct her to do so. Then if she's caught, Trump will protect her.

Do the senate democrats have an inventory list of all the files? How will they know if everything is delivered to them? How will they know nothing has been tampered with?

It's kinda hard to hold the AG in contempt of congress when the AG is the one who would prosecute that charge. I'm just trying to point out that realistically, no one in Trumpzackistan needs to comply because there is no one to hold them accountable. And they know it.

As a democrat, if the only thing you have is a vague hope that a political opponent might be “charged” with a legal or administrative misdeed, your approval will remain at around 36%. That’s your base, and if you can’t develop policies that attract others beyond your base, that’s where you’ll remain, drifting in a sea of irrelevancy. It might be significant to remember that bringing charges against Trump didn’t prevent him from re-election.
 

I wasn't talking about Trump here. I was talking about Bondi. At the very least, she is going to be completely disbarred when this is all said and done.

I am not a patient man when it comes to jailing criminals.

It's a personal failing.
