Sen. Hirono: Men Need To "Shut Up," Kavanaugh Accuser Needs To Be Believed And I Believe Her

Sen. Mazie Hirono (D-HI) told men to "shut up and step up" when it comes to Brett Kavanaugh's sexual assault accusation. Asked whether her being one of four women on the Senate Judiciary Committee impacts the Kavanaugh confirmation proceedings, Senator Hirono says, "I just want to say to the men of this country: Just shut up and step up. Do the right thing for a change."

"Not only do women like Dr. Ford, who bravely comes forward, need to be heard, but they need to be believed. They need to be believed," Hirono said. "We cannot continue the victimization and the smearing of someone like Dr. Ford."

"We have to create an environment where women can come forward and be heard and be listened to. I want to thank Dr. Ford. I commend her courage. I believe her," the Senator said.

Believed? That would take evidence. We should take the accusations seriously and look into them, investigate as well as we can at this point. But evidence is required.

This isn't a court that will be determining if Kavanaugh goes to jail. Being appointed to the Supreme Court is an incredible privilege and an honor. It's one that comes with an immense responsibility. Innocent until proven guilty is fine if he was being charged with sexual assault and facing prison time, but we have a duty to make sure that we have complete confidence in someone who would serve a lifetime appointment on the highest court in the land. Just like any other election the people voting on his nomination should use and consider any and all information about the candidates past when weighing in their decision. If they trust her word over his they are under no requirement to need further proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

Ford, and the Dems, want the FBI to investigate this. The Republicans would love to ignore it. The Dems want to follow the usual process, which is to investigate the character of the nominee.

Due Process would be to investigate an allegation like this...

Trump is the one that doesn't like free speech. She wants Republicans to do their job. Which is something most of the country would like to see, not that there is any chance whatsoever they'll do that.

The woman who accused Minnesota Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison of domestic abuse said on Monday that Democrats don’t believe her story and threatened to isolate her over the allegations.

Karen Monahan, a former girlfriend, came forward last month alleging that Ellison sent her threatening text messages and once screamed obscenities at her as he dragged her off a bed by her feet.

Ellison has denied the accusations, saying he “never behaved this way.” He did acknowledge he was in a relationship with the woman.

I would certainly respect her position if she holds the same standard for all accusations from all women.

To note, I would want her opinion on, for example, Juanita Broderick vis-a-vis Bill Clinton. Or Karen Monahan and Amy Louise Alexander vis-a-vis Keith Ellison. Does she hold the same standard for them and would she advise everyone to believe them first and ask questions later, or does she believe in those cases we should wait to see the evidence? In other words, is her position regarding the believability of accusers consistent across the board, or simply a matter of partisan political convenience and posturing?
