Rothschild can point to a US Constitution that guards against any abridging of the freedom of the press—and to a Wisconsin Constitution that is even more explicit, declaring that “no laws shall be passed to restrain or abridge the liberty of speech or of the press.”

Yet, both men were arrested. The governor and his allies argue that a federal court ruling that allows officials to establish permit requirements has cleared the way for a wholesale rejection of constitutional values. They will find they are wrong, just as Adams and his associates did when they had Vermont Congressman Matthew Lyon and editor Benjamin Franklin Bache arrested. But the fact that judges and juries will eventually reject Walker’s flawed premises does not clean up the mess that the governor has made. When local elected officials and magazine editors are being arrested, real damage is done to the rule of law and to the broad understanding of basic liberties.

But the damage will eventually be undone. Walker is going too far, just as Adams did. And, as Jefferson explained in the darkest days of his struggle, “A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles.”

Of course, Wisconsin got the government they asked for. Twice. I don't know how they feel about Walker now.

I know if he runs for President, I will go into shock if he gets the Republican nomination.

Why? We have been electing power hungry idiots that ignore the constitution for DECADES.

More evidence of how xenophobia and scapegoating is the only way conservatives can convince anybody to vote for them.

Thankfully there's no future in that, and as the nation moves on foolish states, like Arizona and Wisconsin, will fall more and more behind.

I used to see WI as being just like us (MN) - no more. Now it's like some foreign country where horrible things are befalling her citizens.

Although the one thing I agree with that he did regarding public sector unions (which I appose vehemently), if he runs for and gets the nomination, I'm crossing party lines and be voting for Hillary.

So what is they were actually charged with? This opinion piece conveniently leaves that out.

Outlawing the silly and destructive sort displays of disruptive childishness that ignorant unionist acted out recently in the Wisconsin State Capital building is merely pest control.

People who disagree should have no problem with vagrants camping on their lawn.

I suppose some might find it odd and disturbing to see an governor acting like an adult. If we are all very fortunate, they'll get used to it.

misdemeanor obstruction and resisting arrest.
it seems he interfered with the police with they were detaining another protestor... or so sayeth the police.

it seem the protestors who show up don't have a permit, as is required by law.. and has been backed up by appeals courts.
so they get arrested by the police ( not the Governor, as the clueless seem to believe)

the journalist shouldn't have been messed with, but the protestors,....well, the law doesn't allow much room for police to operate in.

comparing this stuff to the alien and sedition act is ****ing ignorant, though.... so is progressives whining about the Constitution.

I beleive that we may have one playing POTUS now. ;)

Him and a few before him for sure. But it seems some people are unwilling to see the big picture. Which is made more evident with the other comment about WI being like "some foreign country where horrible things are befalling her citizens." Do they not look at all of America and see what both sides are doing the citizens? Or is it just living in denial?

Arresting the journalist was too much, though he did say he explicitly disobeyed a police order. He was not, however, arrested because he was critical of Walker, which is what a true analogy to the Alien and Sedition Acts would entail.

Arresting the protesters was for violating a time/place/manner restriction, which they explicitly refused to comply with. Whether the specific restriction would pass Constitutional muster remains to be seen, but it wasn't based on content, which again is what you need to if you want to compare it to the Alien and Sedition Acts.

This is all based on long-standing First Amendment jurisprudence. Agree with it or not, that is the legal structure.

Both are murky, and it's certainly a troubling situation, but neither rises anywhere near to the level of "1798." Gross hyperbole doesn't help anything.

Now . . . that said, I applaud any challenge of governmental encroachment into civil liberties and Bill of Rights territories. I go quite a bit further than most on the absoluteness of rights, especially those in the Bill of Rights. I think these restrictions were too broad, and the enforcement of them, in the case of the editor, too heavy-handed. And I think the current jurisprudence on many Bill of Rights issues are far too tolerant of restriction.

I am, however, continually told that rights are NOT absolute, and restrictions necessarily apply, and am frequently amused at the reaction to restrictions if they're done by the "wrong" people, and especially TO the "right" people.

For example, I suspect that the exact same situation applied to a Westboro Baptist Church protest would probably garner a bit less outrage.

The question was pseudo rhetorical. Was hoping some the "Walker is the Devil" crowd would dig in a little further than the atrocious article in the OP. Comparing this incident to the Alien and Sedition Acts is nothing more than a weak tool to spin up the low information crowd to flip their lids. It appears to be working effectively.

Why does the left feel that if they are "protesting", laws don't apply to them? And then they invoke the Constitution. The document that they would tear up in a second, if they could. The document that Obama is shredding on a daily basis. Go cry somewhere else.

Pardon my forwardness...but thats just horse****. You hate Scott Walker because he is a republican. If it was a democrat you would be doing the same thing people are doing today...going through machinations and manipulations to excuse and justify the daily intrusions into the private lives of US citizens.

Of course...thats just an assumption. I could be wrong. You may be one of those democrats that are equally outraged and vocal against the current administration for their abuses of power.

Such as rejecting the radical socialist agenda of phat public employee unions that don't care who they bankrupt to take all they can? Yeah just horrible.

I used to see WI as being just like us (MN) - no more. Now it's like some foreign country where horrible things are befalling her citizens.

Why doesn't anyone have even ONE picture of Governor Walker arresting someone given all the claims of all the people he's arrested?

Please post a picture of Walker arresting someone, anyone, ever. Or even a warrant he's signed to have someone arrested.

This thread died a quick and deserved death.

Of course they're avoiding that. Otherwise the truth might come out.

Start asking questions about facts and liberals mind set of emotion gets all fuzzy and they forget.

The only way Libbos know how to respond to facts is to start screaming, "liar-liar-pants-on-fire".

Or suggest Bush did it. That's usually in their screams some where.
