Do you have any evidence of that? And so what if anyone supports a political candidate? There is nothing illegal in that.

I am beyond tired of tax-payer funded stadiums. Corporate welfare at it's worst.
No, it is not corporate welfare at its worst. There are many other far worse examples, such as what happened with Solyndra. The Democrat Mayor of Milwaukee also supports it, with the issue crossing party lines. “Cheaper to keep them:” Gov. Walker, state, local leaders announce funding plan for Bucks arena | FOX6Now.com

I'd have to see an accurate assessment of the financials before could offer a proper opinion ..... political blather doesn't do much to convince me one way or another.

it's entirely possible that it may be more expensive for taxpayers to let the team leave.... there are revenues losses to be considered here.

taking the numbers thrown out there as truth, how does losing 419 million stack up to spending 220 million ( plus interest, currently around 3%) over the same period of time?.... to me, it sounds like a substantial net loss.

ideology is one thing... math and money are quite another.... they don't often compliment each other.

in any event, it's up to the local governments ( state, county, city) to decide... if they feel it's better to take the substantial loss in order to quell ideological arguments... fine by me... it's their money.

Sports are also a cultural activity supported by the taxpayers, just as are libraries, art galleries and many different festivals. There is nothing new in this.

true as well.... as any Civilizations player would attest to

Walker and most of the other out of touch losers in the GOP clown car will be a small footnote in the history of next year's election.

Few will take note of, and almost no one will remember the BS that they spread.

I hope so. Walker actually scares me.

It is complete hypocrisy, that's what it is. All the wailing about helping out companies that actually kept well paying jobs here in this country, something that benefited more than one state. But this short sighted bail out, local at best, just because it wasn't introduced by the current administration, that's ok.
Look at how much money went into the Detroit superbowl stadium, and how little came out of it in the long run.

So Walker wants to cut millions from the schools and from the University of Wisconsin. But he wants the tax payers to fund $250 million for a sports arena and raise taxes to raise those funds? Schools aren't worth raising taxes but a arena is?

But so called 'fiscal conservatives' will support Walker's tax increase. He is a Republican, and anti-union, so Walker's hypocrisy won't bother them.

Perhaps cutting funding and hiring more qualified teachers isn't such a bad idea, given the fact that Americans pay second highest in the world for education but the results are getting worse.

How do you expect to hire more qualified teachers by cutting funding and their salaries? If you want better personal then CUTTING their pay isn't the way to go.

Cutting funding and salary isn't the way to go to get better more qualified teachers.

How about being more effective, or getting rid of bad teacher's and replacing them with good teachers? Perhaps Charter Schools would help, or the voucher system.

Lots of things need to be done. But cutting their pay and funding isn't one of them. You want good people? You got to pay them, and give them the equipment to do their jobs. Teachers. Whoever.

But all that's besides the point. Tax payer funded sports arenas and stadiums has been proven to be a losing proposition for the tax payer. And here we have a supposed fiscal conservative who wants to basically give a Corps a $250 million subsidy, and raise taxes to do it. Damn hypocritical. And so is any so called fiscal conservative who defends Walker on this.

You've got to be able to fire them too, and hold them accountable for their lack of abilities, something the unions, and the politicians they support, work against. Right now, with the amount of money taxpayers are contributing, Americans schools should be the second best after Switzerland. Instead check who they are running behind on this list. However if leftists indoctrination is the goal then they would probably be in the top ten. You can check this out and see if the taxpayers are getting their money's worth. http://cdn.theatlantic.com/assets/media/img/posts/pisa-2012-results-overview graph 1_larger.jpg

Many cultural activities for any community are money losing propositions, opera, ballet, libraries, cowboy poetry contests, and so on. But people want them and they get a lot of pleasure from them. If they can even come close to breaking even then that is a good thing.

However the federal government is $18 trillion in debt with BHO running up a deficit of $1trillion per year. The electorate should have protested in 2012 but they apparently wanted more of the same, with free contraception and Obamaphones being the main focus of their attention.

Yeah we're discussing the so called 'fiscal conservative' Walker giving welfare and taxpayers money to rich Corps while cutting funding for schools and UW.. So please try, TRY to leave Obama out of this. Obama has NOTHING to do with this, but you people with ODS just can't help yourselves.

And the Obamaphone really has nothing to do with this.. That business has been completely debunked. Seriously, years ago it was proven Obama had nothing to do with the Obamaphone program. Maybe Fox or whoever is still peddling that nonsense, so maybe you should watch other news sources.

As far as I know, local government support for stadiums has never been contingent on having free or low price tickets available for the poor, so the comparison is not accurate.*

No politician wants to be blamed for losing the local pro team and the teams know how to play cities against each other. The result is each city scrambling to offer more incentives for the teams to remain or move to their town. All the negotiating is done before citizens have any input to the process. Usually its already a done deal when legislators and citizens are given any information. (like the TPP) The politicians get the glory and the access to sky boxes while the peasants subsidize the stadium, the billionaire owners and the millionaire players with both their taxes and high admission fees.

*there's also the fact that unlike libraries, museums, galleries etc, watching sports generally makes people stupider, not smarter. But I won't go there.

He should invest in Solyndra instead.

it's highly doubtful taxes will be increased over funding the stadium... it would be necessary, however, to raise taxes in order to retain the 250 million a year in school grants.

they don't pull 250 million out of the general fund to finance a stadium...most likely, that funding will come from loan guarantees backed by Muni bonds issued in that amount for the project.... general funds will be used to service that debt over the long term.

school grants, however, come directly from general funds without additional debt issuance.... and they are distributed every year.. year in, year out.

it'll be a long time before the 250 mill is paid off for the stadium, and with low interest rates, it won't cost much over the original price tag..... over that same time period, the school grant cut of 250 million a year would equal Billions in saved money ( 5 billion over 20 years) ... provided the cut remains over the course of several administrations.

none of that even takes into consideration the price of allowing the team to leave.
there's a lot of tax revenue that would leave with the team... Walkers people say it's almost 500 million... I don't know what the real figure is, but it's substantial, no doubt.

in the end, the stadium idea is favored by folks on both sides of the aisle in that state...at the state and local level.
hopefully the people of Wisconsin support their team and spend lavishly at the games and on merchandise....

If the electorate is serious about debt then the national debt has to be looked at, as well as the indifference of the electorate toward it, or else its nothing more than political grandstanding, which I strongly suspect is the case here.

In fact Walker has done very well with the budget in Wisconsin, which is why he was reelected.
