It has just come to my attention that in illinois (maybe other states) the lotto and casino's said they would use there funding to pay for schools. I waqnt to know where this mony is going because i sure haven't seen it. Let me give you an example. If someone wins 2,000,000 a week from the lotto then the lotto told the schools they would would get the same amount. Thats almost a billion dollars a year. if someone could share with me where or when this money is going that would be great.

I think the concept of lottos funding schools is absurd but it happens in Missouri and I think it also occurs in Oklahoma.

...you're trusting casinos? Hm. I don't know where the money goes...could it be distributed to all schools in the area or the state? Well...it's certainly a great time when casinos are needed to fund schools.

In Florida, if memory serves me correctly, a portion of the lottery goes to the education department of Florida.

Yeah...that's the case in Ohio & several other states...BUT, the money seems to never get there. Now, in Ohio we got this bozo that our bozo state government let him have 50 million dollars to invest on the state's behalf & they've just figured out he's been ripping them off. Something tells me that some of that money would have been useful for our public schools.

Well, however the funds for education is obtained, I'll bet that much of it is embezzled. At least in my state it is.

Welcome to the forum Citizen! :2wave: In Maine the Lottery money goes into the general fund which has a big black hole in it. Like in other places the lotto was going to pay for education to reduce the property taxes. The yolk was on us. It never happened thanks to a Democrat controlled government for over 25 years. That sucking sound is very loud here.

Thanks for the welcome.

We have had both democratic controlled government and curenly have a republican controlled government. The state lottery has not decreased property taxes in Maryland, nor has it improved the school system. Now they want slots. Again they tell us the lie that the proceeds will be used to fund education. I don't believe it. I don't even believe we need more funds for education. I think the funds that we already have should be used more wisely. There too many crooks running education.

Here Here, Citizen, agreed!

Here's a novel idea: When money is earmarked for education, how about the money earmarked for education actually go to education.

Hey, how about this instead. Your kids, your bill. You have kids, you alone have to pay for their education instead of having everyone pay for the rugrats. You use the system, you pay for it. No more socialism.

There are Opportunity Scholarships for students who attend failing schools, and whose parents cannot afford to send their children to better schools, whether public or private. If a school is a failure, take the children out, send them to better schools while that failed school fixes itself. Competition makes everyone work harder. No one wants children, whether your own or a perfect stranger, to fail or be failed by a failing school. Opportunity in education should be the same for all, no matter the economic circumstances. In that manner, I believe government and businesses can work together. Too bad there are those, especially on the left, who do not agree on this effort.

The Ohio Supreme Court ruled in 1997 that the current method of funding schools violates the state constitution. 8 years later we're still funding our schools the same way, our state government has been unable to find a better solution and we're still funding our schools with property taxes. Hence, those schools in middle to upper class communities get more funding. Very few, if any, of the schools in these communities are in "academic emergency". By contrast, many inner city schools without the high property tax base

I don't have the answers to where all the money comes from. But IMNSHO the schools that produce should get the money - and the students. I'm a big believer in school choice. Allocate a specific amount of money per student and give that money to the school the student attends - be it a public school, charter school or private (religious or non-religious) school. Make education part of our "free market" society. The schools that get results will grow and continue to excel. The schools that don't get results will lose students and ultimately fall by the wayside.

In California, lying Democratic party liberal extremist operatives brought us the lottery, told us to vote for it, that it would save the schools, and to "do it for the children" while they had photo-ops holding children.

Then when the money started pouring in from the lottery, they raided the previously earmarked school money and took it to spend on their other big government pork barrel projects, now they want bond issues passed, which is Democratic party double speak for loans with interest, and each time they say we need to do it for the children.

I have never met a Democrat who didn't like a tax hike.

These legislators need to be tried, sentenced and hanged for treason.

In Ohio the schools received all this tobacco settlement money. Great - no problem. Lots of things we could do with that money. Except for the fact that it has strings attached - rather than let the school districts decide how to spend the money it is assigned for construction of new schools.

There are definitely some older schools in Toledo that are in need of major repair/renovation. But many of the older schools have lots of character. Even newer buildings (~30-40 years old - and in good shape) will be torn down and replaced.

Heaven forbid we actually use the tobacco settlement money for education of the students - maybe additional drug and alcohol awareness, new textbooks, computer upgrades, teachers.

Oh - and you're right, Dems do like tax increases. Have lots of ideas on that, but that's for another thread. ;)

Our country would be very chaotic without SOME socialism. Education, for instance is good for all in society. The more educated people, the better off out country will be. Look at the prison system, for instance, most of our inmates are uneducated. I would rather pay for education than pay for prisons. In the long run it is cheaper.

A bit extreme...

Perhaps we should go back to Lassiez Faire economics and allow the robber barons and monopolies to rise up? We could do away with taxes and let companies pay for education! After all, companies are so generous.

The country would be better off with less educated people have babies. Or people with only larger bank accounts having babies. Are you advocating those as well?

This is why I favor a mixed economy. Not everything should be state controlled, but not everything should be privately controlled. Education is important because it makes our nation smarter. A smarter nation is better equipped to compete in the world. It doesn't help if only those that can afford eduction are educated. We should probably have more funding as our society falls behind nations like Japan which value education much more than us. Having more educated people may cost everybody money, but in the end it does our nation good and makes us stronger.

No, Are you. Although it is true that more educated people have less children. If we only allowed people with large bank accounts to have babies, this country would not be better off. Our country would be under populated. That is a silly premise in my opinion.

What proof do you offer that the country would not be better off if we were underpopulated?

HERE, here, I totally agree. Anything to the extreme is not good for our nation. A society must take care of the society. Plain and simple.

Fewer Americans for labor, Fewer Americans for Armed forces is not good for our country. What do you think?

Fewer americans for labor would also mean fewer products in services. Since there aren't as many people, why would we need the same amount of products and services? Yes armed forces, but the small the population, the fewer the crimes as well.

The reason why we are a rich and powerful nation is because we export many goods and services. Small nations will never have the power we have. The Soviet Union was, at one time, competition and China could be as well, but other than China, no other nation in the world can compete with us.
