Scalia spoke at the Univ. of Connecticut's law school yesterday. Someone asked him about why he didn't recuse himself from the Cheney case that was before the Supreme Court (particularly after he had gone hunting with Cheney and was transported to the hunting location on Air Force II).
Scalia said that his NOT recusing himself was the "proudest thing" he had done on the Court. Here's where he shows what an unprofessional judge he is: He said that anyone who would question a Supreme Court justice on this issue should "get a life."
What educated, intelligent legal scholar talks like that? One of the 9 justices on the Supreme Court of the United States says to "get a life" because some people questioned his impartiality? A case comes before the Court that involves a friend of his with whom he had recently gone hunting and flew on Air Force II. Ummm, I think in these circumstances there is an appearance of partiality, and that's not a dig at him. Who wouldn't be partial towards a friend of theirs? If he was was so confident in his impartiality, he wouldn't get this defensive about it. For God's sake, DeLay got a judge removed from his case because the judge was a democrat! The judge had no personal relationship with the DA or DeLay, but because there was an appearance of impropriety, the judge was removed.
I never knew how unsophisticated a Supreme Court justice could be until now. It's rather disappointing. I feel pretty confident that John Roberts, Clarence Thomas, and Samuel Alito would never say such unprofessional statements. Even when Samuel Alito was accused of failing to recuse himself in a case that involved Vanguard, he never had the audacity to tell the senators during his confirmation hearing to "get a life." He also exuded confidence in his decision to NOT recuse himself (although I disagreed with his position). Scalia appears to have an inferiority complex, the poor guy.
