Re: Saudis threaten to sell $750 billion US assets if Congress passes bill that would

Let's be honest, even in today's economy three quarters of a trillion dollars is a lot of money. It's about what we paid for the initial invasion of Iraq.
Hmmmm, once we put it in those terms, it's almost worth it to finally stick it to the people who really were responsible for 9/11, isn't it?

And don't forget, if they do this, it will be a grave blow to THEIR economy, a much more serious blow than it will be to ours.
And they can ill afford it.
Therefore I view it as an empty threat, bring it on, bitchez.

If they do it is at a loss. Who would they turn to as a Military Allie? Russia? China? Doubtful.

You were protecting them. You have a huge military base there. They brought down WTC. They should have been invaded instead of Afghanistan or Iraq.

What rot. "They" did nothing of the sort. They have a problem with criminal citizens. But who doesn't?

I can see the hypocrisy at the highest level which you pretend not to see. They have the worst human rights record.

Such a lawsuit would be a Really Bad Idea. Was the Saudi government involved? Probably not as a whole, but some within the government apparently were...and I'm pretty sure they would be to some extent liable. But let's say we get the whole 750B. Sure, we won...but at what political and diplomatic cost?

This is a matter of realpolitik at least as much as it is a matter of right and wrong.

They are financing your debt. Whey they sell 750B worth your economy goes down the drain.

Well, suing SA over 9/11 would be rather off the wall and making a law to enable it after the fact is not even rule of law. But it would be a type of war that Congress would be declaring.
A judge recently allowed Sandy Hook victims to sue gun manufacturers for gun related deaths, so why not?

Lol. You mean we'll lose diplomatic face with a nation that turns a blinds eye to ISIS, has one of the worst human rights records in the world, and exports Wahabism? Oh no!! whatever shall we do if we lose face with such an ally.

Forget lawsuits. There was a time when acts of war were retaliated against. Imagine if after pearl harbor the government did *nothing* militarily against japan and in fact whisked high ranking japanese out of the country, invaded say thailand, and then 15 years later offered some 'condolence' to what remains of the victims' families by offering the 'opportunity' to seek monetary damages against the real perpetrators.

Did GWB admin know that higher ups in the saudi government were well aware of the 9/11 attacks and aided the attackers? Absolutely

yeah diplomacy with a monstrous dictatorial regime, no thanks. An invasion of saudi now would be far more justified than of iraq and hey, just steal their oil while at it!

China can blackmail too by selling US Treasury bonds. They print the money to buy the bonds.

China sold $600 billion of US Treasuries last year and noone seemed to notice. The US Dollar just stayed up. Defies common sense and conventional economic wisdom. Maybe manipulation is the bottom line, or not?

And since they're our largest customer for our arms - their defense budget is larger than Russia's(!) - what would THAT cost us in terms of blood and treasure, since Iraq and Afghanistan were costing us at one point $12B per month? And that was WITH logistical support by other local nations, which we suddenly wouldn't have anymore if we invaded. Not to mention what would happen with a couple million Muslims being outraged at us here stateside.

Good thing you're not in charge!

Oh, just a $44B per quarter trade surplus we have with them, thanks to all our arms that they buy.

Yeah, never mind the $44B per quarter trade surplus we have with them, huh? And if you'll check, their economy is not in the best of shape, thanks to the oil glut. The great expansion of oil production we've had during the Obama administration enabled us to stop buying their oil...but they're still buying many billions of dollars' worth of our weapons.

And yes, oil production increased greatly under Obama:

Under Obama, the steady drop in U.S. oil production which had occurred virtually unchecked since 1971 has been reversed. Crude oil production has risen every year of his administration. It has jumped 72% since he took office, producing about 3.6 million additional barrels a day during that time.
Oil production has grown so much that last summer the nation caught and passed Saudi Arabia as the world's largest oil producer. Before Obama leaves office, domestic oil production could top the U.S. record set in 1970.

iraq was due to a never-ending occupation. The actual invasion was over before anyone noticed and hussein captured. That's all i'm advocating, deposing the saudi royals, taking their oil, and ending the deal with the devil
