Saudi Arabia has introduced a series of new laws which define atheists as terrorists, according to a report from Human Rights Watch.
In a string of royal decrees and an overarching new piece of legislation to deal with terrorism generally, the Saudi King Abdullah has clamped down on all forms of political dissent and protests that could "harm public order". The new laws have largely been brought in to combat the growing number of Saudis travelling to take part in the civil war in Syria, who have previously returned with newfound training and ideas about overthrowing the monarchy.
To that end, King Abdullah issued Royal Decree 44, which criminalises "participating in hostilities outside the kingdom" with prison sentences of between three and 20 years, Human Rights Watch said.
Yet last month further regulations were issued by the Saudi interior ministry, identifying a broad list of groups which the government considers to be terrorist organisations - including the Muslim Brotherhood.
Article One of the new provisions defines terrorism as "calling for atheist thought in any form, or calling into question the fundamentals of the Islamic religion on which this country is based".
Joe Stork, deputy Middle East and North Africa director of Human Rights Watch, said: "Saudi authorities have never tolerated criticism of their policies, but these recent laws and regulations turn almost any critical expression or independent association into crimes of terrorism.
"These regulations dash any hope that King Abdullah intends to open a space for peaceful dissent or independent groups," Mr Stork said.

The Taliban-with-oil are at it again.
Of course, atheism could already have been considered a crime against Islam: Apostasy.
And they've added just about everything else in as 'terrorism' too.

The important message here is for all of the endlessly braying atheists on this forum, constantly broadcasting their hatred of Christianity and knee jerk defense of Islam as their partner with the common enemy of Christianity, take heed. Perhaps the non-Christian future you long for will not favor you to the extent you believe it will.

Saudi Arabia is seemingly leaps and bounds ahead of the U.S view on atheism.
Grotesque PC Lies by Paschendale as always. In real life, we attack Islam just as much as Christianity. In fact, we attack the two for basically the same reasons. Both are horrendously authoritarian, support genocide, torture, and murder. Both hate knowledge and try to suppress science. Both facilitate the rape of children. Both carry out the systematic dehumanization of women and treat them like breeding chattel. Both are based on nonsense stories told by primitive ignorant people thousands of years ago who thought that the world was full of magic and demonic creatures. Both plagiarized blatantly from other religions local to their origins. Both have race-based ties and favor a single race above others. Both have openly endorsed slavery.
Both contain commandments to be kind and peaceful, to give charity, to feed hungry people, to house the homeless, and to love their neighbors. Both fail abysmally at making that happen, instead choosing to be cruel and warlike, to condemn the poor, to starve hungry children, and to declare anyone who does not share the same faith to not be their neighbors and fit for death and violence.
In every way that matters, the two are indistinguishable. That predominantly Muslim nations are currently more fundamentalist and theocratic than predominantly Christian ones (there were plenty of instances in history where this was not the case) does not vindicate anyone. The fundamentals are awful, cruel, and detrimental to humanity and the less we follow them, the better people we become.
We do not ever give Islam a free pass, but we do reject assertions that Christianity is any better, and reject the treatment of Arab and Islamic people in the western world who are persecuted for their religion and ethnicity. We also reject religious violence between Muslims and Christians throughout the world. We're frankly sick of you two killing each other and catching us in the middle of it.
All of the above is equally applicable to Judaism, but it has never managed to rule nations the way that its children has, and so has never been able to enact the same kind of pain and violence, but contains the exact same commandments and provisions for them. I wouldn't want anyone thinking that I give the religion of my birth a free pass over its relatives.
All religious nonsense is the enemy of rational, educated people.

Being called a terrorist by the Saudi Arabian government merely for being who I am is one of the greatest honors ever handed over to me.
I will wear it with pride.

Islam is just behind Christianity by a few centuries.Grotesque PC Lies by Paschendale as always.
"indistinguishable"!
In another in a Dishonest Moral Equivalence attempt of the two religions.
Only surprised the Horrendous PC didn't get more likes from others who make up so much/most of the board here.
As I have posted at least dozens of times, many Straightening out paschendale, there is absolutely NO comparison in regards tolerance between Islam and Christianity.
None whatsoever.
Anyone making the comparison, especially from the vantage point of 'we' atheists, is deluded by PC Politics.
Islamic and Christian scripture are very different. Their Prophets were very different. Warrior/Peacenik
'Turn the other Cheek' was Never 'kill them wherever you find them'.
Want to find that for me in the NT?
ie, there are Two Muslim Theocracies of the two major sects. Most other Muslims countries have at least some component of it.
Not so in Christianity.
Most Muslims are literalists to that Intolerant Holy Book and support the most barbaric penalties of Sharia law.
Not so of Judaism of Christianity.
Christians have been or are being Persecuted or cleaned in MOST Muslim countries by their populous with or without the cooperation of their governments and laws thereof.
This is NOT so of Christian West where Islam proudly proclaims they are the 'fastest growing region'.
Across the globe, Many people die die EVERY day in the NAME of Islam.
ie, 30 days
Islam: Making a True Difference in the World - One Body at a Time
Comparables?
Not so of Christianity.
Any attempt to make them equivalent in intolerance or destructiveness is Deluded PC and in the case of Paschendale, who can never answer my direct rebuttals, it's Dishonest in the extreme.
The Taliban-with-oil are at it again.
