Satellite data shows entire Conger ice shelf has collapsed in Antarctica

Nasa scientist says complete collapse of ice shelf as big as Rome during unusually high temperatures is ‘sign of what might be coming’

An ice shelf about the size of Rome has completely collapsed in East Antarctica within days of record high temperatures, according to satellite data.

The Conger ice shelf, which had an approximate surface area of 1,200 sq km, collapsed around 15 March, scientists said on Friday.

East Antarctica saw unusually high temperatures last week, with Concordia station hitting a record temperature of -11.8C on 18 March, more than 40C warmer than seasonal norms. The record temperatures were the result of an atmospheric river that trapped heat over the continent.

Ice shelves are extensions of ice sheets that float over the ocean, playing an important role in restraining inland ice. Without them, inland ice flows faster into the ocean, resulting in sea level rise.

Better figure out how to get all that extra water into space, then we can save our coastal cities.

This is likely natural and cyclical.

Shelves grow out and get to big.

Tidal forcing cracks them

they break away.

They grow back over time.

this is perfectly logical if you understand such sciences.

Industrial activity has affected our climate. This is not a good sign at all. This ice shelf has existed so long it had a name. And there it goes. Poof. Thanks to burning fossil fuels.

The hurricanes and wildfires will only increase in intensity. And more.

Greta is right.

For the record I am 100% against the Fed. providing any support to those living on the coast. It's not like property owners didn't have ample time to read the writing on the wall. Just keep repeating No Bailouts No Bailouts.

They are not the ones to blame.

Your incessant nonsense is idiotic. It is YOU who fail to understand science. According to science.

That’s not what climate scientists are saying about the present global warming and its consequences.

Bail the water into outer space.

Floating ice, does not change the sea level when it melts!

Floating ice, does not change the sea level when it melts!

Higher sea levels

Glacial ice accounts for about 10 percent of all the landmass on our planet. There’s some 5.8 million miles of it, and it stores almost 70 percent of our planet’s freshwater, according to the National Snow & Ice Data Center. What happens when it melts? Put simply, it causes sea levels to rise. If all glacial ice were to melt, it would cause the sea level to rise 230 feet around the world.

And the definition of an ice shelve is floating ice, which when melted does not cause any sea level change!
Do you watch your iced tea glass to make sure the melting ice does not cause the glass to overflow?

Once again longview chiming in with basic ass shit he for some reason thinks escapes every scientist in the world!

Melting ice increases albedo which causes more warming which makes more land ice melt.

You know glaciers are found on land, right?

You could have tried reading:

It stands to reason that this is a natural cyclical process. Show me otherwise!

From the OP post #1

The ice shelve itself cannot change the sea level!
The recent extreme warm weather, was just that, weather.

More mis/disinformation from the science denier side of the AGW issue. The fact is:

"The common misconception that floating ice won’t increase sea level when it melts occurs because the difference in density between fresh water and salt water is not taken into consideration. Archimedes’ Principle states that an object immersed in a fluid is buoyed up by a force equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces. However, Noerdlinger notes that because freshwater is not as dense as saltwater, freshwater actually has greater volume than an equivalent weight of saltwater. Thus, when freshwater ice melts in the ocean, it contributes a greater volume of melt water than it originally displaced."

(See 3rd para):

So if all the floating sea ice in the world melted, how much would sea levels rise?

It stands to reason that this is a natural cyclical process. Show me otherwise!

“Stands to reason”. *L*
So now, according to Lord, scientists no longer have to do actual research and compile data, but can simply use “stands to reason” as a foundation for their conclusions, Uh-huh.

Glaciers form on LAND not in water. When those glaciers start to melt they form floating ice so it is not the surface of the water that freezes; it is the runoff from land

The OP specifically stated that what broke off was an ice shelve, not a Glacier.
from post#1,
Satellite data shows entire Conger ice shelf has collapsed in Antarctica

And where do you think the ice shelf broke from?
It could have been floating out there for a million years, in any case the water it displaces
is so close to the resulting melt water as to not be a concern.
