The Vermont Senator is poised to arrive at the Democratic convention as the stronger candidate to take on Trump.Senator Bernie Sanders would defeat Donald Trump relatively easily in a general election, according to the latest polls. An average of the three most recent major polls predicts a victory of more than 14 points, which would be a landslide in modern presidential politics.

  • CNN/ORC, May 1: Sanders obliterates Trump by 16 points
  • IBD/TIPP, April 28: Sanders defeats Trump by 12 points
  • USA Today/Suffolk, April 24: Sanders defeats Trump by 15 points
As the country adjusts to the notion that a xenophobic, racist billionaire will be the Republican candidate for the presidency in November, no doubt many hope the strongest candidate emerges from the Democratic Party to defeat him.

The polls are clear on who that candidate is.

And at this point, it isn’t just the polls. Political analysis of the two Democratic campaigns also indicates Bernie Sanders is the stronger candidate.

Bernie scares me more than any other candidate. I can say two things positive about him, though. His work in civil rights is first class and he is ideologically consistent. That aside, it doesn't matter because he's not going to make it out of the primaries.

Woopy ding-ding. Sanders isn't going to dent the dems as presidential hopeful. Berners know this. Some Berners will side with Trump and his anti-establishmentarism.

Some Conservatives are also siding with Trump as the clear cut choice to Hillary.

Trump's favorables are going up.

Maybe the dems want to make Sanders their presidential hopeful?

Too late I suspect, I am not so sure about Sanders putting up enough fight in the remaining State contests to force a contested Democrat convention. It might be close, we cannot be for sure.

Yeah, Bernie would absolutely crush Trump but the Dems are focusing on establishment loyalty.

Which poll are you looking at? Trump has a 65% unfavorable rating with women, wishful thinking on your part. But then again, that rating is so low there is only one way to go.

Or you could vote for Fried Chicken. It too is quite likely to defeat Trump in a general election.

Trump's favorables are going up.

Only if you limit yourself to the last month (5 points during the period that he locked down the Republican nomination and moved past the abortion issue). However, the highest favorability average that he has ever scored is a 37.6% in late january, and he currently sits at about 36.1.

I'm also looking at the favorables of establishment VS anti-establishment candidates. Seems like lifers in politics are really taking it on the chin in polls. Let these current poll results nourish you but become aware these polls are gonna change.

A contested convention is one in which no candidate gets a majority on the first ballot. It's literally impossible for that to happen when there are only two candidates.

I am sure they will, but he is so far in the hole, there is not enough time to dig out. I suppose the GOP can keep wet dreaming over Hillarys indictment, as its all they got.

As horrible as Trump is, BS would probably do the greater harm.

How so?

He'd just be the president, not god or a king.

What exactly do you think he's gonna do?

Congress will still make the laws. He would just sign or veto them.

I think of would do the country good to hear the actual liberal positions and not just republican light, which is all the dem party is now. A slightly gentler neoliberalism.

Why is sanders so scary?

True. The country has about the best set of checks&balances of any I have looked at. But that is no excuse for neglecting the most efficient stop on power. Obama put through ACA, which indicates that Congress can be had. Executive orders and the like can be used treacherously. And Justices die. All sorts of things a President can do.

Don't forget not executing laws proposed by both houses like immigration law or making up other laws like the Justice Department and its attempt to force N. Carolina out of its 'bathroom' stance for LGBT.

Sanders is bar none the most dangerous candidate. He'd be such a damage to foreign policy, monetary policy, the economy, and just about anything else he wants to touch. I despise Trump, but if it's ever Trump vs Sanders Trump may be the lesser of two evils.

Can you imagine a Clinton indictment, followed by a Sanders nomination, followed by a Sanders' presidency?

The world would literally stop spinning.

Congress can challenge an EO.

Of course Washington and Jefferson would **** a brick if they had known a president would use an EO and get away with it.

President Obama proposed the ACA, then backed-off it over his first year in office, where it seemed to languish awaiting it's demise. Speaker Pelosi then picked-up the ACA torch and carried it through her Democratically controlled Congress. It was her Congress that passed the ACA - not Obama!

Also, the President nominates SCOTUS hopefuls, but the Senate evaluates and confirms or *denies* them! [as is currently occurring now with the stalled Merrick Garland nomination]

There's little a sitting President can do legislatively, unless Congress approves. And there's only so much a sitting President can do using administrative orders, without running afoul of the Constitution and it's SCOTUS guardian. And even when the President is issuing administrative orders Constitutionally, Congress reserves the right to over-ride said orders if it sees fit.

So unless we'd like to speak in other more intangible terms such as 'image', 'world stature', etc., I see little the President can accomplish without the cooperation of Congress.

And I'd also add: There's virtually no action the President can do that Congress cannot explicitly preclude or reverse. For example, Congress can simply revoke the President's recent Executive Orders on immigration and gun policies if it so desired - but it chose not to do so.

Polls are nothing more that theoretical exercises, if the candidate can't ascend to their party's nomination! :doh
