Italian senators have backed stripping far-right leader Matteo Salvini of his parliamentary immunity. It means Salvini could now face a trial for allegedly illegally detaining migrants at sea. It's in relation to a case last year when he refused to let a rescue ship carrying scores of migrants dock at the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Now a popular racist politician who illegally denied protection for asylum seekers when he had power as an interior minister has lost the protection of Italian law from prosecution. It is ironic. He had been using the refugees as hostages until the European Union agreed to take them. Salvini ought to have allowed the Italian prime minister or the foreign minister to advocate for a change in EU asylum policy rather than use his domestic appointment to conduct foreign affairs by breaking international law. It is to be hoped that the racist scoundrel will get his comeuppance.

This subject of using various nations to import in "asylum seekers," really just importing in a problem, is becoming absurd.

What did everyone think would happen once the floodgates were opened up?

The European Union is not conducting any wars in the Middle East nor human rights abuses in Africa. There are refugees and countries must offer asylum. It was wrong and illegal for Salvini to use the refugees as hostages, preventing them from landing and applying for asylum. This is not how policy is supposed to be conducted. I am pleased with the Italian prosecution.

To what end, how many do you take?

International law does not have a quota on the number of refugees who need asylum. We must take as many as necessary to protect human rights. We can always try to work toward peace and justice in the Middle East and Africa so that innocent people can remain in their home countries.
As I mentioned in my op, not liking EU policy was not grounds for Salvini to prevent refugees from landing in Italy.
