Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) says he’s willing to relinquish his duties as chairman of the Republican National Convention in July if Donald Trump requests it.“He's the nominee. I'll do whatever he wants,” Ryan said during an interview with the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Monday. A Ryan aide confirmed the remarks posted by the paper’s reporters on Twitter.
The willingness to hand over the convention position comes ahead of Ryan’s Capitol Hill meeting this Thursday with Trump and Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus.

Jeeesh. :dohAbsolutely no backbone. Interesting how many of these Republicans were so anti-Trump before hand, saying he would be terrible, and how unpresidential he is and now many of them are on hands and knees for him. Hell of an election year, thats for sure.

This could be Ryan's moment.

I was about to give him a shred of respect in my mind....

He is acting like a spoiled child that didn't get his way. so far trump looks like he is going to win the nomination.
sorry don't like it but it is what it is.

Its a pretty good move. If Trump acts like a baby who cant even pretend to unite the party then the party just simply step away from him. Like that Simpsons episode where Homer became president of the stonecutters and they cant remove him from power so they all quit and make a new club called the "No Homer's"

I don't see the problem here. Trump will be the nominee, and if Trump wants Ryan to resign as chairman of the convention, then Ryan should do so, just as anyone else should do so. It's not like Ryan is saying he will resign as Speaker of the House. He's saying he will resign a basically ceremonial position. The committees of the RNC run the convention. The chairman gives a few speeches, introduces people to speak, and acts as the master of ceremonies accepting nominations and overseeing the roll-call vote of the states for the nomination and the Republican candidate for President.

Ryan has learned a lot from dealing with liberals in the government...when people start thinking less of you for your actions, play the victim card.

The only problem is it usually works for the liberals, but I'm not so sure it'll work for Ryan.

Why do you say "no backbone"? It is a matter of interpretation. No? To me, it is exactly the opposite. He is not willing to compromise on his values, and seemingly thinks that Trump is anything but capable of representing conservatism. I don't see that as bowing to Trump, but bowing to the will of the people, those who have voted for Trump in the primaries.
The thing is, Ryan realizes that he can't stop the runaway train. He is walking away, out of its path.

It's quite simple actually. Any politician that has been in the game for more than two minutes knows:

If you oppose a candidate in your party's primary who then goes on to take your party's nomination - the amount of crow you must eat [immediately] is proportional to your initial opposition. Ryan, and a lot of establishment republicans like him, has gone beyond what any smart politician does in his opposition during the primary. Now, the amount of crow he is due to eat just may choke his career to death.

Actually that's a smart move by Ryan. He, like rational people, can't stomach the idea of the Democratic fraud getting the GOP nomination, and he is disassociating himself from what is sure to be a disgusting spectacle.

Possibly. Ryan doesn't strike me as a person who gives a rat's ass about that. He didn't want to be speaker. He does what he thinks is right, speaks his mind. It is a quality I admire and wish many more had. Trump speaks his mind, but to his advantage and calculatingly so. Ryan just speaks.

Someone's got it. :)

If he isn't going to support Trump and he turns out to be the nominee......he should step down. I hope Ryan gets Cantored.

I agree. If he doesn't support Trump and thinks the guy would be a disaster, why should he basically host the party in Trumps honor? I will bet he is hoping Trump asks him to step down.

The establishment Republicans have put all their eggs in the anybody but Trump basket. Now that it's nobody but Trump. their feewings got hurt and they are at a complete loss as to what to do next.

As of now, they have two choices. Happily and quickly embrace their nominee, or concede the the entire government to the Democrats.

I would guess the dilemma is which position will personally hurt them the least.

Don't fool yourself into thinking the Speaker of the House is not a politician. Consider, if Ryan were the white knight you speak of - he would have turned down the leadership/power position if he didn't "want" it.

He should have either kept his mouth shut. He's the convention chairman. He boxed himself into yet another corner. He could have been a contender for VP but with his recent stunts, he might be on the way out.

He's doing his best Pontius Pilate and washing his hands of Trump. The meeting they're supposed to gave will be interesting.

Just calling it as I see it.

This political tactic of washing your hands of things uncomforable NEVER EVER works. Remember how all those Dems tried to "wash their hands" of the ACA? They never gained any Republican support and Democrats didn't see them as loyal. This led to unprecedented losses in the House in 2010.

In my time at DP, I've seen far more conservatives play the victim than liberals. The whole media bias forum is mostly conservatives kvetching about how persecuted they are.

i would change that hi-lited word to "evangelical Christians"
they see their decline in political and social power as being persecution

VP? Ryan and The Donald do not share the same ideology there is no way Ryan would ever consider being a partner of Trumps. I warned that if The Donald got the nomination he would be stuck not only fighting with the Dems in Congress but also a large number of the Repubs, as we see that is exactly what is taking place. And yes even for some Repubs the lesser of the two evils is Hillary Clinton, I guess they see the Donald for who is and still believe the Nation is still more important than a Party Election Win. Good For Them.

VP?!!!!

ryan is already planning his 2020 run for the white house
why would he want to damage his political reputation by aligning himself with tRump? that's for pols on the order of christie, carson, and palin

Well, I'm thinking more along the lines of liberal politicians...like Obama.
