'Our historic duty': Putin plans steps to boost Russia's birth rate - Reuters

MOSCOW (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin announced measures on Wednesday to boost Russia’s birth rate, describing them as vital to the country’s future though they are projected to cost at least $6.5 billion this year alone.

Saying the demographic situation was “very difficult”, Putin proposed payments for low-income families with small children, allowances for first-time mothers, higher payments for families with more children and the creation of more places in nurseries.

Sort of the reverse of China's 'one child' policy. "Makin' bacon' is our civic duty'.

They've been trying this modality for over a decade. Doesn't work because couples can't afford kids with Russia's moribund economy.

Population wise, Russia has never recovered from the devastating loses of WWII.

Not surprising, Russia and several other nations are dealing with the impacts of an aging and/or declining population for any number of economic and social reasons.

He'd have better luck if he gave Trump supporters a one-way ticket over there and encouraged them to pop out more and more babies.

Have more babies so we can put them in jail!!!!

It's not unique to Russia; Israel has provided generous incentives for child birth for many years, and Japan followed suit. Italy was discussing incentives for families with at least 3 children. As with most things, it's only an issue when Russia does it.

He could emulate Hitler's approach: houses full of fertile young women where studly soldiers on leave or R&R could spend a week or two playing musical beds for the Fatherland. They could arrange cut-rate travel packages for young American studs to come over at a discount rate with free room & board.

No. Pay attention. This is the Russia/Ukraine forum.

If you want to discuss population decline in Israel or Japan or Italy, you know where those forums are.

Yes, they have.

It’s not quite correct that their population never recovered from WWII.

Actually, for a while in the late sixties, the Soviet Union was bigger than the US.

Birth rates plunged in the late 1970’s, and the breakup didn’t help.

But the ethnic Russian birth rates have been dismal for three decades.

The Soviet Union is not Russia.

If you look at the Russian population demographics Bell-curve post WWII, it is clear that after a certain span of years, mathematics [and reality] would catch up with the population demographics.

I'm just pointing out that Russia wasn't the first country to attempt to offer incentives for child birth. It's been a complete success in Israel, where Israeli women now average 3.4 children, while most of Europe is somewhere around 1.2. Israel won't need mass migration in the future to sort out population decline due to abortion.

Russia is not tiny Israel, nor does it have Israel's economics.

Yep, I'm familiar with all the rhetoric about why Israel should be rewarded for doing things we've been trained to frown upon in the West, like blood purity tests as a requirement for emigrating, or mostly restricting abortion to minorities in order that minorities lose ground on demographic representation. Practices that you would start threads about if they occurred in Russia, IOW. eace

I won't ask you nicely again.

Many countries have pronatal programs, including Turkey, Spain and Germany. The US may at some point, too, if young adults continue to have fewer children.

Russia has a large aged population and needs more workers to help support the system. In a way, we're sort of similar here in the US, because we have a growing number of retirees -- the Boomers -- and families have been having fewer children in recent years, so it gets to be an upside-down human pyramid -- and humans are living longer all the time, so that exacerbates the problem in countries like Russia and the US.

As our societies progress, young adults aren't quite so eager to settle down and be parents. Now, they want to better themselves and pursue other goals -- especially young women.

And, there goes the birth rate.
