Russia is reporting just over 100,000 Covid 19 deaths, but the truth is that three times that number there have died due to the disease. Russia has a dismal healthcare system, ranked 103rd in the world. That combined with a home-grown vaccine of dubious efficacy means that Russians are likely to continue to experience an outsized death rate compared to other European countries.

SAMARA, Russia — She burst into the hospital morgue and the bodies were everywhere, about a dozen of them in black bags on stretchers. She headed straight for the autopsy room, pleading with the guard in a black jacket: “Can I speak to the doctor who opened up my father?”

Olga Kagarlitskaya’s father had been hospitalized weeks earlier in a coronavirus ward. Now he was gone, cause of death: “viral pneumonia, unspecified.” Ms. Kagarlitskaya, recording the scene on her smartphone, wanted to know the truth. But the guard, hands in pockets, sent her away.

There were thousands of similar cases across Russia last year, the government’s own statistics show. At least 300,000 more people died last year during the coronavirus pandemic than were reported in Russia’s most widely cited official statistics.

Russian doctors are under orders to list COVID as the cause of death only if no other possibilities exist.

For example, if a dead person had both COVID and pneumonia, then pneumonia would be listed as the cause of death.

This methodology [by design] severely undercounts COVID deaths in Putin's Russia.

Yep, since few would admit to intentionally catching COVID-19 they must have done so accidentally, thus the official cause (manner?) of death is “accident”. ;)

It's striking that Putin's handling of the pandemic was so similar to Trump's. He had no push back so his results were even worse.

Hardly surprising it's under reported when the state runs the media and controls the output. Two of the three main TV channels are state owned.

No diff than if Trump had his way.

Depending on, you can't trust many stats that come out of countries like Russia and China. The CIA might have a good idea, though.

Actually, anyone can have a decent idea. Fortunately, the Russian officials who release the COVID statistics do not hobnob with Russia's Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat)

So then, what you need to do is see how many deaths Rosstat declares for any current month and how many it declared for the same month one or two years ago.

The difference will approximate COVID deaths across Russia for the current month.

If you're talking excess deaths, I wouldn't know if the govt is fixing those numbers. Even excess deaths need be categorized to determine the likelihood of COVID, like pneumonia, age, etc. Just prior yr isn't exact enough experience to go by. BTW, how would I get those numbers, anyway?

Rosstat doesn't adjust its mortality data for Kremlin propaganda purposes.
