Russian troops reportedly attacked their own commanding officer by running him over with a tank after many in their brigade were killed amid the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
Ukrainian journalist Roman Tsymbaliuk said in a post on Facebook that Russian Col. Yuri Medvedev was attacked after fighting in Ukraine left nearly half of the men in the 37th Motor Rifle Brigade dead,
Tsymbaliuk said the brigade injured both of Medvedev's legs by hitting him with a tank, causing him to be hospitalized, according to the newspaper.

The incident occurred roughly 30 miles from Kyiv, in Makariv, Ukraine, the Post reported.
A senior Western official told the newspaper that he thinks Medvedev has died, saying the incident shows the low morale among the Russian troops in Ukraine.

He was killed "as a consequence of the scale of the losses taken by his own brigade," the official said, according to the Post.

What a colossal botch job of a military operation which never should have taken place. The low morale of Russian troops comes as no surprise at all. I understand that many of them were lied to and told they were simply conducting exercises before being ordered to attack civilians. In some cases, they could be ordered to attack relatives and friends they knew in Ukraine. They know that what they are doing is wrong.

Maxparrish:

Yup, fragging/killing incompetent "dying-officers" who get your own buddies killed unnecessarily is an old and some would say venerable tradition on the battlefields of the world. The trick is to actually kill the dangerous officer and to make the fratricidal homicide look deniable as the result of combat or as the result of the fog of war. If this story is true, then the Russian tankers screwed that up too.

Be well and stay alive.
Evilroddy.

Russian troops are now at the "Fragging the commander" stage of dissension.

Ya, the thread title left out the word "by" so it might be a bit confusing.

Apparently, the new Russian recruit isn't like WW2. When half get killed by an incompetent and callous commander, they get a bit upset.

50% casualties?!?!?

That's hideous!

No wonder that war criminal and thug (as President Biden describes him) is carefully guarded in the Kremlin.

(If I am not mistaken, during the Vietnam War, some American soldiers attacked their own officers for various reasons.)

Yes, it was called fragging. As a draftee Army whenever an officer became extremely unpopular there was someone who might roll a grenade under his tent flap or cot.

Yes, that is the classic level of attrition that functionally erases a combat unit. You might as well break up the survivors and send them as replacements to other units. The commander should have been run over.

Should never have been in command. When a Blackwater team suffered 9% casualties all the experts gasped and Blackwater dumped the contract. The Romans coined the term "decimated" which literally means one in ten died. 50% is almost unheard of.
