Russia warns Sweden and Finland against Nato bid

Russia has warned Finland and Sweden against joining Nato, arguing the move would not bring stability to Europe. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that "the alliance remains a tool geared towards confrontation".
It comes as US defence officials said Moscow's invasion of Ukraine has been a "massive strategic blunder" which will likely bring Nato enlargement. US officials expect the Nordic neighbours to bid for membership of the alliance, potentially as early as June. Washington is believed to support the move which would see the Western alliance grow to 32 members. US State Department officials said last week that discussions had taken place between Nato leaders and foreign ministers from Helsinki and Stockholm. Finnish MPs are expected to receive a security report from intelligence officials this week, and Prime Minister Sanna Marin said she expects her government "will end the discussion before midsummer" on whether to make a membership application. Finland shares a 1,340km (830 mile) long border with Russia and has been rattled by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

But Moscow has been clear that it opposes any potential enlargement of the alliance. Mr Peskov warned the bloc "is not that kind of alliance which ensures peace and stability, and its further expansion will not bring additional security to the European continent". Last week Mr Peskov said that Russia would have to "rebalance the situation" with its own measures were Sweden and Finland to join Nato. And in February Maria Zakharova, Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman, warned of "military and political consequences" if the countries joined the bloc. Despite the threats, both countries have pushed ahead with their bids and stepped up defence spending.

This is one result of what happens when you invade a neighboring nation without cause... other vulnerable neighbors seek more protection. A huge Putin blunder.

Russia has no right to dictate who can join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) just as the West has no right to ditcate who can join Russia's CSTO (Collective Security Treaty Organization).

Well, if they want to try the same thing on them, they'll be out of ammo and soldiers.

Pretty sure I know what the people of Sweden and Finland think of what Putin says !

Russia can't dictate what other Countries decide.... This Crazy Putin is a nut to think he can tell countries what to do and what they can't do.

As Putin invaded Ukraine, he threatened to use Nukes if NATO intervened. This seems to have acted as a pretty good deterrent.

If he invades a NATO country and levels the same threat, won't that carry the same deterrent against NATO response?

No.

Putin can bite me. If he does Trump will say he bit me better than anyone ever bit me before. A perfect bite.

I think Putin is unaware there are forces in Russia and Other Places that can "take him out at any time"...

If he is unaware that NATO knows 'every single player in the Putin Regime", and they certainly have used the extensive system of Intelligence and Strategic Modeling, to know various scenarios of how it will play out to remove Putin and his regime.
In principle Putin has already sealed his own fate. It's only a matter of time before he is taken down, and its likely to happen within the Russian System by Russian Operative.

Too many lives have been lost on a Pointless Invasive Mission driven by "Arrogance and Greed".

When this Savagery is Over... It's likely Ukraine will be "Rebuilt" to be a far better developed and designed country and its cities will likely become Model Designs of 21st Century Innovation and Technology. I think Ukraine will have to begin again with a better society of racial and ethnicity diversity, and can never go back to having the racist elements that were interwoven within it.

Russia may have problem for the next couple of decades for sure, because it has a great deal of change that is necessary, and it won't escape the need to make those changes. It will certainly need a "New" Geopolitical Ideology. When the Russian people get from under this Totalitarian Containment, they will have to learn how to be a society that has more respect for the Global Community.

What's he gonna do to stop them?

You seem to hold more optimism on the resolve of the NATO posers than I do.

WHY do you feel the threat of nuclear response is effective now, but would NOT be ineffective in that case?

What if it's "only a minor incursion" into Poland as one example?

The “minor incursion” nonsense was Biden’s call for when to impose economic sanctions on Russia for further occupying Ukraine (a non-NATO member nation). An Russian (or other nuclear weapon possessing nation’s) attack on Poland (or another NATO member) nation would be seen as an attack on all. As far as what a ‘proportional’ NATO response to a “minor incursion” would look like, that is TBD.

This is pretty much my opinion as well.

When nothing is considered to be a rule carved in stone and there is no enforcement mechanism in place in any event, then law and the force of law cease to exist.

That is the motivation for the aggression by Putin and the motivation of the anarchists in the US recommending the "Defund the Police" program.

If there are no absolutes, if a border is a border as one example, then there is no reason to defend an idea of anything being an absolute. Relativism is the corrosion of civilization.

All that is required for evil to triumph is that good men do nothing.

What a crock of crap that is.
