Russia-Ukraine Gas Talks Resume as EU Seeks to Avert Supply Cut

Long-standing gas-price and debt disputes between Russia and Ukraine have disrupted deliveries to Europe in the past.

The recent ruling by Europe's top court limiting Gazprom's usage of the Opal pipeline in Germany is a huge gas-transit win for Ukraine.

The underlying purpose of Moscow's Nord Stream-2 Baltic Sea pipeline to Europe was to bypass Ukraine and deprive Kyiv of transit fees. Now Norway is refusing to allow the laying of underwater pipe through her waters.

In a 2018 ruling, the European Court of Arbitration awarded Ukraine's Naftogaz $3.8 billion in damages from Russia's Gazprom for price gouging and monopolistic practices. Gazprom refuses to pay.
