Russia 'to renew offer to supply S-300s to Iran' - FRANCE 24

Russian President Vladimir Putin will offer to supply Iran S-300 air defence missile systems as well as build a second reactor at the Bushehr nuclear plant, the Kommersant business daily reported Wednesday.

Putin will renew an old offer to supply Iran with five of the sophisticated ground-to-air missile systems at a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rowhani on Friday, Kommersant said, quoting a souce close to the Kremlin.

Putin is set to meet Rowhani at a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation held in Kyrgyzstan on Friday.

What would really be the humdinger is if Putin got Iran to suspend their enrichment and take the deal Russia offered a few years back...

Russia is the only other arms supplier that can realistically compete with the US. Putin is just going after sales a bit more aggressively now.

Lest we forget about the Chinese. They have a major role to play in this game.

>" Russia's S-300 missile system could dramatically change the stakes in the Syrian conflict if it is sent to Damascus, which Russia has signed a contract to do. RFE/RL lays out five things to know about the air-defense system.

What are the capabilities of the S-300 system?

The S-300 missile system is designed to shoot down aircraft and missiles at a range of 5-to-150 kilometers. That gives it the ability to destroy not only attackers in Syrian airspace but also any attackers inside Israel.

It can track and strike multiple targets simultaneously at altitudes ranging from 10 meters to 27,000 meters.

"The S-300 is Russia's top-of-the-range air-defense system," says Robert Hewson, the London-based editor of "IHS Jane's Air-Launched Weapons." "It is a surface-to-air missile system that's capable of shooting down any modern combat aircraft or missiles, including cruise missiles. In a way, it is the Russian equivalent to the U.S. Patriot system. And what it does for Syria is it adds a whole new level of capability on top of the existing Syrian air defenses. Syria already has a lot of Russian [surface-to-air] missiles, but the S-300 would be the most advanced..." <

Heya WCH. :2wave: From your link. Russia knows it can make some moves now and Putin isn't wasting any time.

The source told Kommersant that Russia's offer would depend on Iran's withdrawing a $4 billion lawsuit that it has lodged at an international court in Geneva against Russia's arms export agency.

Kommersant wrote that Putin would offer to supply Tehran with a modified export version of the S-300 systems called S-300VM Antey-2500.

The source said the deal was not "particularly profitable from an economic point of view, but was rather political.".....snip~

Why should we care what weapons Iran has?
Are we going to invade them next?

If the Iranian regime get nukes, it will turn the country into another North Korea. It will be a dark-age for the people of Iran lasting generations. No advancement of human rights, civil rights, labor rights or environmental rights and little to no outside contact.

We cannot allow that to happen.

bah dude seriously? Do you seriously believe that fable?
If the salvation of mankind is dependant on the absolute destruction of the Iranian regime
then we should get right on over there and make it happen ASAP!

I'm sicken fricken tired of this propaganda, we've been hearing about how the world will end when the Persians
can cobble together a few crude devices that can't even be delivered. If it's such a big deal let the Israelis vaporize them?

Here's another thing to consider, the lil nutball in North Korea has a few crude devices
has anything changed? You've got to realize that these silly little countries having an inconsequential
number of crude fission devices means nothing. What are they going to DO with them?

Another question, do you know how powerful and how small a W-87 is?

Guess what, I could care less about those people, they don't matter at all.
If you wanna picket for Iranian women's rights go do it in Tehran

That book seems more concerned with small arms. The real money is in heavy equipment. Choppers, jets, rockets, tanks.
I just provided a link to the FAS website. It's not an easy website to navigate but it's all there. Best way to navigate the website is to use it search engine.

You could say the FAS website is the left's version of GlobalSecurity.org - Reliable Security Information

Because he has a tough time negotiating the site your point is invalid? un no heh heh
Really who cares what air defense systems are in place? The only reason it would matter is if you plan air operations there, right?
Why are the Iranians a problem?

How about I put it another way? Iran and Iraq fought for eight years and it ended in a stalemate.
We kicked Iraq's ass twice without raising a sweat
(ok then we screwed up the occupation thinking they could become some democracy)
If Iran got the bomb it wouldn't make any difference, unless of course the jews don't wanna live under that threat
but that's their problem eh bubby?
