Yea... Good times  We need to pay attention to this, but do continue to report on Trump's 'bone spurs'. It's way more important. Googled this when I heard a snippet on the news. First page of results, not one news outlet from the U.S.

Russian President Vladimir Putin oversees new hypersonic glide missile test
Speaking to Russia's top military brass after watching the live feed of the launch of the Avangard vehicle from the Defence Ministry's control room, Mr Putin said the successful test was a "great success" and an "excellent New Year's gift to the nation".

The test comes amid bitter tensions in Russia-US relations, which have sunk to their lowest level since the Cold War times over the conflict in Ukraine, the war in Syria and the allegations of Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

Mr Putin's hopes for repairing ties with Washington under President Donald Trump have fizzled amid investigations into Mr Trump's campaign ties with Russia, and tensions have escalated as the US administration slapped Russia with new waves of sanctions.

The Avangard was among the array of new nuclear weapons that Putin presented in March, saying that Russia had to develop them in response to the development of the US missile defence system that could erode Russia's nuclear deterrent.

I think that puts them about a decade or more behind us at this point. Now if they actually begin developing a mass drive weapon, or a substantially powerful rail weapon. Then I would really start to pay attention.

We do need to pay attention in where they try to deploy such material though. So I would suggest keeping a good ear to the ground on this one.

Silo launched, high altitude 6000km range.

Seems like the ideal target for Patriot missile defence and that is 40+ years old.

we'll build the lead lined ceiling, and Russia will pay for it.

While you may not be able to "walk and talk at the same time," as it were, many other folks can. Accordingly, those folks can pay attention to the glide missile and Trump's depravity.

The US is putting the rail gun on the back burner, and putting more focus on laser weapon systems, at least for the navy.

Several new Russian weapons were reported at least as far back as July 2018 and the Avangard in March 2018.
I wonder how effective and accurate these new weapons are. To be sure, if tipped with nukes, it doesn't matter too much how accurate they are if they're aimed at the US mainland. Tipped with conventional warheads, it's a different matter. I mention this because in the Cold War days the US overestimated the Soviets.
Of course, from the public's POV, the Soviets' braggadocio exacerbated the matter. Even so, one must wonder how much of what we're seeing is "smoke and mirrors" and how much is fittingly disconcerting.

If one has reason to believe Russia is territorially expansionist, the point of "saber-rattling" these new gizmos is clear: "We want to reclaim the lands of the former USSR; we're preparing to do just that; unlike the US' prior adversaries, we can, unfettered, strike the US homeland." If one ascribes to Russian expansionism theory, the point of Russian annexing Crimea is as straightforward as the nose on one's face; one need only look at a map to see it.

All these bellicose overtures play on a set of fears that aren't particularly rational. To wit, in this era of post international economic interdependence, it just doesn't make sense for any militarily-major nation to attack the US and vice versa because just as in the the mid-to-late 20th century there as MAD with regard to nuclear weapons use, there is now not only MAD vis-a-vis nuclear warfare, but also MAD of a sort with regard to economies. Like it or not, the US economy is the one on which the whole world depends enough that ruining it -- economically or by exploding our "stuff" -- will as surely ruin one's own. I mean really, what's another nation going to do? Repeat Alaric's mistake?

You should run a virus check or something on your computer. Maybe Republicans, Russians, the Alt-Right, Hannity or Tucker Carlson have hijacked/hacked it so you don't get news? I just Googled "new Russian weapons" and got three pages of results, quite a few of which predate the creation of this thread. The first three pages of results are shown in the attachment below.

We've only seen it in animations. Let me know when they do a test that is verifiable.

So many new invincible Russian weapons! So many animations!

But will it hit what they aim it at? Given Russian ballistic accuracy historically...not very likely...but it will miss the target FAST...if it doesn't self detonate (another Russian military tech mainstay) on the way.

Dismissed. Since you are not the news media your 'red' bolded was not directed to you or other people here. Reading and comprehending can be a problem for some.

How droll...

The Russians do some things extremely well, other things not so much.
Hypersonic vehicles are one of the things that they do not do very well, even if they've managed a few successful tests.
We've tested our own version of hypersonic weapons vehicles in the recent past.

The rub in all of this is not whether our military could respond adequately. There is no question that we could many times over, and the Russians know this. The big rub is an American population raised with the kind of societal conditioning that results in the expectation of a ONE HUNDRED PERCENT GUARANTEE of ABSOLUTE SAFETY AND SECURITY from any enemy.

One would think that 9/11 would have dispelled such notions but in a curious twist, it seems to have exacerbated such unrealistic expectations instead. We have much more to fear from smaller and mostly asymmetrical attacks from non-state actors. And there will never be a 100% guarantee of absolute safety from such an entity. And yet if polled, most Americans believe such guarantees are attainable, against anyone.

The only 100% guarantee is, any state actor that chooses a first strike move against us can expect an overwhelming response.
Our bigger problem, at least if recent history is any guide, is that our response to non-state actors might be totally misguided and directed at non-participants, as is the case with Iraq after 9/11.

Our biggest problem however, is the fact that withdrawing from weapons treaties like the ABM and other non-proliferation agreements gives a virtual blank check to Russia and other states to go to the limit in development of more and more weapons of this type.
At present, our only assurance to bank on is our obvious response to any such strike by any hostile nation.

I've worked on a lot of their vehicles and weaponry...to put it kindly...THEY ARE NOT THE GERMANS, by a long shot, engineering-wise, and are no match for the US.

Worked in what capacity, engineering? Assembly? Testing?

Lasers huh, I guess we aren't that far from having actual star wars after all. Here's hoping space magic doesn't become a factor that we hedge our galactic bets on.

Gee sounds like we should throw another 100b into the DOD black hole GOP welfare fund.
