Russia Suffers Blow as Germany Strikes Natural Gas Deal With Qatar

3.20.22
Germany said Sunday that it had reached a deal on an energy partnership with Qatar, as the European powerhouse seeks to reduce its dependence on Russia amid the invasion of Ukraine. Robert Habeck, Germany's Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, met with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani on Sunday. State-owned QatarEnergy said in a statement that the two countries "would re-engage and progress discussions on long term LNG supplies," Reuters reported. While Qatar didn't say that an agreement had been reached, and a German spokesperson told the news outlet that a deal between the nations had been finalized. "The companies that have come to Qatar with (Habeck) will now enter into contract negotiations with the Qatari side," the German spokesperson said, according to Reuters. The deal with Qatar comes as Germany has taken other steps to reduce its dependence on Russian energy in recent weeks. Last month, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced the nation would stop the certification of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow would recognize the sovereignty of self-proclaimed "people's republics" of Donetsk and Luhansk in Ukraine—a step Putin took just before he invaded Ukraine.

"We need to admit that in the past we have been too reliant on Russian imports," Habeck said in late February, according to Deutsche Welle. "In the medium and long term, we are going to significantly reduce the consumption of fossil fuels." One part of Habeck's plan includes passing a new law that would ensure that Germany's energy sources would be 80 percent renewable by 2030 and 100 percent by 2035, Deutsche Welle reported. In the weeks since the invasion of Ukraine, Western nations have sanctioned Russia, which has contributed to an increase in energy prices. In the U.S., which has seen record-high average gas prices in recent days, analysts have attributed the hike to Russia's continued offensive in Ukraine. "Prices have spiked across the country due to the Russian war on Ukraine as sanctions cripple Russia's ability to export crude oil, spiking gas prices by nearly 41 cents in the last seven days alone," GasBuddy, a company that tracks fuel prices in the U.S., said in a statement on March 5.

Putin's brutal invasion of Ukraine is THE wake-up call.

Like a recovering addict, Europe needs to smartly wean itself from Russian energy exports.

that was surely a hard task for Habek - change a despot with another - but it is important to do atm

Many West European countries will turn to the Arab world to find alternatives to Russian gas and oil. The Arab countries are as problematic as the Russians though.

I don't recall Quatar bombing European cities to dust.

right - that´s the reason they are an alternative atm - but they practice slave labour, use all tools of totalitarian regimes, treat woman as second class people with literally no rights etc pp
so that it is an alternative that hurts

Correct, going and beg to the Arabs is just switching one dictator for another to serve.

Free World needs a special GAS deal between USA/Australia and Germany/EU !

THE ENERGY MESS

Many West European countries will turn to the Arab world to find alternatives to Russian gas and oil. The Arab countries are as problematic as the Russians though.

Many West Europeans are going to get off their fat-duffs and seek alternative sources of energy. The sun and wind come to mind. Windmills are sprouting all around France, particularly offshore n France's coast.

But they aint enough. The main alternatives to oil and gas energy are nuclear, solar-, ethanol-, and wind-power.

I (for one) think that the easiest/quickest way out of this energy-mess in Europe is nuclear. Because we have the know-how and have had it for a very long time. France is putting up windmills wherever there are ample winds to turn them. But they are really-'n-truly ugly-platforms.

However one-upon-a-time we dug for oil, why can't we dig-for-heat? From here:

The geothermal gradient (i.e. the increase in temperature with an increase in depth in the Earth) is not equal all over the world. On average, the temperature increases 2°- 3° C per 100 m in depth, however the increase can range from 1° to 5° C/100 m.

Is 700 meters too deep? Of course, 35° heat is not that hot - but if there are enough sources maybe they are a solution .... ?

Well yes, the only real solution is to finally fully commit to renewable energy, but instead they run and beg to Doha, Abu Dhabi and Riyadh.

They who? The Germans, yes. Because they obtained most of their supply from Russia. But, the Germans did shut down the second of the two sources coming from there - and it had been almost completed all the way from Russia to Germany!

They need badly another source by the end of the year (and colder weather). At present, 45% of the European Union's natural gas total imports are from Russia.

From Bloomberg News here:
The European Union is capable of going through next winter without imports of Russian natural gas while avoiding serious damage to its economy, according to a new report by Belgium-based think tank Bruegel. (Feb 28, 2022) ...

BoJo was last week in Riyadh begging the Saudis for oil, so it's really not just the Germans.

And yes, I know the dependence on Russia, I am from Finland, and our energy industry is heavily influenced by Russia. While not our only supplier, it's certainly our largest supplier of gas, oil, coal and uranium.

For the moment. And just for the moment.

Any process of nationally changing energy-supplies is a momentous task. And that is saying the very least ...

France has committed to reinvestment in nuclear power and the Dutch government decided last year to drop plans for a scheduled nuclear exit by 2033,...Back in Finland, as much as the country is fairly well-prepared to weather any energy storms on the horizon, Mr. Huttunen warns that prices will remain high as Russian energy is phased out.

Yes, yes, our nuclear sector that is so in bed with Rosatom it's not even funny.

every praising for production of nuclear waste is crime on our kids and theirs for hundred thousand of years

why do some people only can think of their own life span? That´s for me at least as selfish as "let us be rich, third world has to suffer for that"

The whole idea that nuclear is somehow Green is disgusting. Have they ever seen a uranium mine? Do they even know what nuclear waste is? Apparently they think it goes away if you dig a hole. Spoiler: it doesn't.

prove it with a link, your leftist sympathies are badly mislead you, when it comes to nuclear power

F. is actually a huge player on this market as well "Finland is building the largest and most powerful nuclear reactor in Europe - and may have worked out what to do with spent nuclear fuel once and for all."

We recently cancelled a nuclear reactor that was going to be entirely built by Rosatom

Finland Signals Russian-Backed Nuclear Project Faces Halt

Experts: Finnish nuclear project "directly supports Russian nuclear weapon production"

Russia’s energy clout doesn’t just come from oil and gas – it’s also a key nuclear supplier

Russia is not our only supplier of uranium and nuclear technology, but it is our largest one. And that has to be aknowledged, switching to nuclear dose nothing to remove Russia from the equation. Russia is still very much there pulling the strings.

"could" and "might" is not enough reason for me to practice radioactive contamination of the underground - come back when it´s fact

But the problem is that technology is not like other services. You can't change atomic-energy to anything else but atomic-energy. Your stuck with it and its wastes - which are sent to an underground grave.

The sun is the freest element received by the earth and we need to learn how to use it better.

Furthermore, I suggest we look at controlling the expansion of population. Two kids per family seems just fine ...

German energy industrialists fattened up Putin's treasury with billions of bucks in projects that helped enable Putin to invade Ukraine and blast civilian centers. German Uniper built and operates power stations that its owner in Finland said it's going to sell; Wintershall Dea put drilling and extraction technology on Russian soil to fatten Putin's treasury to include his private one while it's also raking in big profits. Each of 'em is now a bailed investor of Nord Stream 2 Completely Kaput, each having to write off its billion euro loan to Gazprom that's been left holding the bag on all five European investors who've fled the coop since. At least Germanischer Lloyd in Munich pulled its pipeline insurance coverage but only when the first US sanctions came down in Q4 2019 and everybody fled the Baltic overnight.

For thousands of years mariners and navies alike have observed the rule: Any port in a storm.

Actually Europe needs at this point to top off its non Russia energy sources by 10% to 15% depending on the combination of components. EU and Germany of course figure they'll complete that before the end of the calendar year.

The Traffic Light coalition government is doing well to resurrect Germany from its miserable failure as a model for relations with Russia. As you'd know the Greens Habeck as energy minister and vice chancellor too has been saying all of this year Germans will need to take some serious hits to the economy to get out of the ugly mess Schroederovsky and Merkelov put you guys into with the barbarian Putin and his Kremlin Krime Mafia. Still however I haven't seen much that indicates the ordinary German mensch has awakened to the Russo-German Axis the dynamic duo put on the Fatherland and that only now is getting swept up and out. Yeah, better late than never yet that's a weak way to have to look at it all.
