Russia says parts of a Ukraine compromise deal are close

3.16.22
(Reuters) - Russia said on Wednesday that some parts of a possible peace deal with Ukraine were close to being agreed after Kyiv agreed to discuss neutrality, raising hopes of an end to the biggest war in Europe since World War Two. "Neutral status is now being seriously discussed along, of course, with security guarantees," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said told RBC news. "Now this very thing is being discussed in negotiations - there are absolutely specific formulations which in my view are close to agreement," Lavrov said. Lavrov cautioned that the negotiations were not easy but that there was "some hope of reaching a compromise". Ukraine has also made cautious positive statements on peace talks. It says it is willing to negotiate to the end the war, but will not surrender or accept Russian ultimatums. Lavrov said key issues included the security of people in eastern Ukraine, the demilitarisation of Ukraine and the rights of Russian-speaking people in Ukraine. He said that President Vladimir Putin had spoken about neutrality, along with security guarantees for Ukraine without NATO enlargement, as one possible variant in February.

IMHO, Zelenskyy can agree to not join NATO (that isn't going to happen anyway), but he cannot agree to the de-militarization of Ukraine. Even though not a NATO member, Ukraine absolutely needs the right to be armed by the West. This brutal Russian invasion demonstrates why there exists such a need. Only Putin can end order an end to the wars in Donbas and Ukraine. Rusian speakers have never been discriminated against. That is simply Kremlin propaganda. Hell, Zelenskyy himself is a Russian speaker. Zelenskyy should make no concessions regarding Crimea, and Russia must agree to full war reparations. Moscow must also withdraw all Russian forces from Ukraine.

If I was Zelelenzkky I wouldn't trust a word Putin says. However, he may have no choice but to agree that the Ukraine won't join Nato. As far as demilitarizing, he would be a fool to be weaponless against Russia.

If demilitarization is a part of the deal, Russia just moves in and occupies the whole country in the confusion. As long as demilitarization is a demand Ukraine can't accept it.

There isn't any point in "demilitarizing" without membership in NATO. There is no such thing as "security guarantees" from a nation that already gave those TWICE before and broke them.

Neutrality is almost a given, perhaps letting Crimea and a small part of the Donbas go as well.

Zelensky is not proud of his Russian heritage. That is why he went from Vladimir Aleksandrovich to Volodymyr Oleksandrovych. If Zelensky be Russian then he be self hating Russian.

Zelensky will have to score a few more touchdowns to earn the trophies you list. Crimea Bowl we can call it.
